I have a laptop that has been acting up. When I partially close the screen (not even close to latching it) the computer shuts down. Is there a setting I can change to fix this? It is an HP Compaq NX 9100.

You can change this option by going into the control panel & choosing Power Options. Then click on the advanced tab & you will see an option for the action that is taken when you close the lid of your laptop.

There may be an option in the BIOS, but it seems rather strange that you have to use the AC adapter to get the machine to turn on again.

It is possible.
Does this still happen if you have the AC plugged in & shut the lid?
Try taking the battery out & using the laptop on the AC power, shut the lid & see if it shuts down.
How old is the machine? have you let the battery run out totally before recharging it?

Somewhere in this laptop's hinge system is a simple microswitch, and for some reason it's (occasionally? Sometimes? always?) activating earlier than it did in the past, I'd suspect a cookie crumb if you eat cookies over the keyboard, but in any case, I would look for a mechanical problem to solve.

Sloth is the mother of invention. Necessity is just a mother...
