My laptop Dell Inspiron 9200 (Win Xp + Sp2) suddendly becomes visible only in the right half of it and the left half is totally black with a few colored vertical lines on the left-most side . The laptop runs exactly as before except for the fact that the left-side of the screen is black as mentioned before . What's going on here ?

1) Is this a hardware or software problem ?

2) Could it be that the back light on the left side of the screen does not work ?

3) Some connections broke at the hinge area ?

Please comment ... I am really anxious for solution . Thanks...

Sounds like a dead/dying screen or inverter, there is only one backlight and either it works or it doesn't. This is a good source of parts: (I would buy an inverter and backlight) but it takes a gentle hand and lots of patience. You could try opening it up and reseating that ribbon cable, perhaps it's become unseated.

All these operations require some skill and adroitness with tiny parts and also a good manual for disassembling your machine. If you're looking for a simpler solution then 's got you covered. More expensive but full instructions and complete assemblies.
