hi guys i got a lap top hp pavilion ze4500(AMD athelon xp-m- 192 mb of ram and 1.79 ghz )and it orginally had windows xp home edtion . Lately i put windows xp pro inside my lap top and upgraded it to windows xp pro service pack2 .But now it is dam slow! My lap top starts and turns off very slower then before. Many friends suggest that i go for memory upgrade. I want to ask you guys if this problem can be solved by memory increse?Furthermore,is it easy to increase the ram if i purchase the right RAm or do i need some expert to do it for me.Do i need to add extra memrory to what i got or replace the 192 mb with bigger one ? What memory size your guys suggest. I be happy if an expert give me some suggestion. Thanks

Contact HP support to see if there is an upgrade for the computer. Some of the computers (Dell, Compaq, etc,), needed a BIOS upgrade BEFORE you install SP-2. Check into it. Also, Win XP barely runs on 192 meg. 256 recommended, and 512 to be happy. Otherwise you spend half of your time moving work in and out of the "virtual" memory (the hard drive). Speaking of which, how much hard drive do you have left? Between low amount of memory, and small "swap" file, you can end up with a very slow computer.

There might be a slight performance difference between Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro, due to the fact that Pro has a number of extra services/features enabled that allow it to be used in a domain environment. However, it is unlikely that the slowdowns are a result of this upgrade. It is much more likely that SP2 is the problem.

Did you upgrade to XP pro so that you could connect this laptop to a busniess network/domain? If so, it's possible that the slowness is caused by additional management software or other domain-related settings.

Thanks kmcferrin. Well i upgraded from home xp to xp pro because i wanted to run IIS for asp scripts. It is slow even with out connecting to internet ! The start up is the slowest part and even shutdown. I even re install xp pro 2 times(not clean installation) but not much improvment. When i had xp home it was not slow. It was much faster. I can not go back to home sicne i neeed IIS.
