Laptop programming issue

I am having problems connecting to the STSe through hyper-terminal. I have downloaded version 6.3 private edition. I have connected using the 9 pin that was supplied with the modem. I have a 9 pin to usb converter for the laptop. I configured hyper-terminal 9600, 8, N, 1 and none. Any advice would be great.

Have you tried using a null modem adapter?
