I have a Dell Inspirion 5000 laptop and when you turn it on the green light comes on and it looks and sounds like it is going to boot up, but it doesn't. It turns on then shuts if self on; and repeats turning itself on and off. It doesn't even get to that boot screen. Just a black screen.

I checked the battery and it is charged and the AC Adapter was plugged in too when I turned it on.

I am not sure what could be causing this. Is there somethings that I could troubleshoot to narrow it down to what the problem is.

Thanks,
Jennifer

There's a hardware problem with it.
Unless you or someone you know is familiar with a laptop's insides, then have a repair shop check it out(assuming that it's out of warranty).

Do you think is could be the motherboard? It also looks like it was dropped on one of its corners. Yes, it is just a little past its warranty.

Thanks for your reply,

Jennifer

Yes, the MB may be defective, along with a few other other components.

Can you hear the CPU fan spinning up? You say it was dropped. Is there any "access" doors on the bottom? My Gateway has access to the memory and the hard drive is removable. If there are any slide plates, open what you can and reseat anything you can. Ski is right, there are many small parts in there that you can damage permantly if you try to open the main case.

Co-worker w/ Jennifer:
I took all removeable parts out of the machine, even took out and re-seated the processor module. Now the machine will start by lighting up one green light and the CPU fan will start to spin, then, nothing. The light stays on, the fan stops spinning, and no restart. The only way to get the light off is to disconnect the battery and unplug the machine. It doesn't go past that when powering up, so we can't even get to BIOS. Checking into repair shops/motherboard replacement...
