I got a free Compaq Presario 1200-xl102 from an old gent who could not get it working. The laptop works fine when hooked up to a normal monitor, but the laptop's screen will not turn on. I disected it and found that the IDE cable on the right side connecting to the monitor is torn and it is too small to sauder. Can I find a replacement to this wire? Where can I find it? or will the laptop end up being a shitty desktop?

You meant IDC cable. Humm, finding a replacement can be a challenge. And you may never be able to find the pinout at each end, so repairing it may be the only way. Does the backlight turn on? You're sure it's the cable? Can you see if wires are broken in the cable? You may want to to find someone who's equipped with surface mount repair equipment (actually, a microscope and a fine soldering iron) and try to get the cable repaired instead.

Thank you for your reply, I phoned HP and they told me what to ask for at a local radio shack. I just made $600 on ebay, YaHoO!!! I think i'll get 3 hookers tonight!!!!

LOL cause the $600 is from the working laptop with the IDC cable!!!!
