Hi everyone,

I have an old laptop that has 2 places to plug in the phone line. One has the symbol of a phone and the other says ether. When I plug my phone line into either I get no dial tone when I try to connect. Am I misunderstanding what these phone slots are for?

Thanks
Pat

the ether plug is short for ethernet. It's meant to be connected to a network switch or cable/dsl modem. It will not work with telephone.

The "ether" should be bigger than the "phone" jack.

Shannan

ok, on my pc the phone symbol is used for plugging a line from the pc to the phone, and the other is for the phone jack. The ether plugin is the same size as the phone jack.

It doesn't matter what I plug the phone line into, I keep getting and error message 'No Dial Tone'. It has 2 modems installed (I don't know how that can be? I thought it could only have one.) Both of them give the same error message.
Tashiba Soft , and Hayes Optima Fax.

The laptop use to have win98 os, now XP is installed. I've checked for updated drivers for the modem and installed them. They report as working correctly, no conflicts.

Thanks
Pat

It does not have two modems. The jacks are the same size cause ethernet uses RJ-45 connectors where teleco uses RJ-11. RJ-11 will plug into a RJ-45 jack and work just fine assuming the wiring is correct though. You'll often see this at offices where the computers and phones plug into identical jacks. After the drivers are installed for the modem connect a phone line to it and open control panel then modems. Open the modems tab and it will list installed modems. Select the modem and click properties. On the properties popup select diagnostics and click query modem. If it does not communicate you have some problem such as wrong driver, irq conflict, or disabled in bios. If it queries fine but does not work with software then the setup in the software is wrong.

Could the problem be the new operating system?

I've queried the modem and get no dial tone in the log file.

Have the phone to your ear while it "checks for a dial tone". You should hear it click as it picks up then hangs up. If you can hear it doing that but not picking up the dial tone then it sounds more like a problem with the modem itself.

Thanks, I found when I plugged in the jack to the pc that if I waited more than 30 seconds after plugging it in, then sign in with netscape, it would go to a busy signal.

When I was able to query the modem I get 692 error, which means a hardware error. I have 2 modems listed and neither function.

Also I have only one usable port listed in the control panel which is com1 (and the printer port). Usually there are 3 com ports aren't there? Maybe something is wrong with the ports?

Thanks
Pat

You can have as many com ports as you need. What you should do is remove both modems listed in device manager and reboot. But before windows begins to load enter the system bios and check that the modem is enabled. Also there should be a listing for IRQ and com port usage for the modem. Once you've set that to something that works for you boot to windows and it should install the driver for the modem.

It's hybernating. I don't know what I did but it won't start again. I guess it's tired. It has panda installed on it and I turned it off, then selected restart and it went into hybernation mode. I don't know how to wake it up.

How do I enter the system bios?
I don't see that option on boot.

Thanks
Pat

I'm a software writer, and know very little about hardware. I live out in the boonies and another guy who lives in a little bit bigger town sent this too me to see if I could get it fixed. I don't know why they think I'm a hardware specialist. It seemed like a small fix so I thought I would try. A friend recommended taking the batteries out and that woke it up. LOL. Don't know why I didn't think of that!

Thanks
Pat

When it boots it shows for a second to press F2 for the boot device selection now. I don't see anything about bios setup. When I press F2 it only has a selection for the drives to boot from.

Thanks
