My friend has a Toshiba Satellite S1800-314 which is too slow.

It currently has 256MB and I don't think any memory upgrades have been done before.

I want to upgrade the memory to 512MB so I wonder if you can tell me if the memory I have is what it was built with and whether it is on one of the 2 slots or all on 1 slot ?

I'm trying to find the memory price so I can decide whether it's worth proceeding. I think I've found a supplier with the right module but I need to know whether it needs 2.

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Regards,
Julia

check the toshiba site... that model may have built in memory and it can be upgraded

it'll have specs for you there too

has a free system scanner. Should tell you what you've got, the max you can get, and how much it costs. Good return policy too...

Crucial isn't bad, but once you've found what memory it takes, you can also check out for a deal. Stay away from house brand, and go with ones like OCZ, Kingston, Micron, Corsair, etc.

That model laptop seems pretty outdated (I think it's a Pentium III). Chances are you'll need PC100 or PC133 SDRAM SODIMMs. 512MB would be nice to upgrade to, but make sure the operating system is at least Windows 2000 (preferably XP). If it's an older version such as 98, it probably won't help much.

A clean install of Windows may also be in order to best improve performance...

My experience has always been if the memory is not found behind one of the doors underneath the computer, it is located under the keyboard. Some machines locate the basic memory (DIMM1) under the keyboard and the extended memory (DIMM2) behind the door in back. Be sure to check out EXACTLY what kind of memory you need (there are several types for notebooks) and also verify with Toshiba what the maximum memory configuration is that the motherboard will support. Good luck!
