laptop.. fan stopping after time

Have a HP Pavilion laptop and the fan seems to stop after it is on for a while. At this point the laptop begins to get very very hot. Heat even coming out of keypad. If we reboot the fan starts up again and continues for a while (prob. getting cpu back to required temp.) I went into the bios and changed the cooling system from silence to performance hoping this will solve things. Anybody else with any ideas?

Contact HP and see if the have a diagnostics tool you can use to test the devices on the laptop. I have run Dell and Compaq's mainly in my shops. They all have diagnostics cd's and downloads you can use. I have many Dell Latitude laptops that will burn your leg if you set it in your lap. I have contacted the manufacturer about this to see if the fan was bad. They told me that this is a known issue with laptops and we ran the diagnostics to find out that the fan was operating normally. They did not seem to have a setting that we could change (Temp level at which the fan would turn on). The only option is to contact HP and find out if it is a known issue for them.

A heat sensor on the board could have gone bad. It could even be a BIOS issue. Certain revisions could have fixed or worsened the fan issue. Best to contact HP or at least visit the website.

actually i went into the bios and there was a silence mode and a performance mode. I took it off silence and the fan ran continuously. Thanks for your help guys.
