I have a disk that failed. In the past with Desktops I have been able to mount the disk as the secondary disk on a working PC and retreive data. With this being a laptop disk, it's connection is different.

Any ideas as to how I can attempt to access the data on this laptop drive?

I've had two hard drives (3.5 and 2.5)go bad and windows wasn't able to see/recover the data. I had to boot into Knoppix live CD and recover the data.

Another option, some laptop brands have their own second hard drive adapter, where the CD drive usually goes, instead of plugging the CD drive you plug a regular laptop HD, this way you could copy the files to the good drive.
