I just noticed that XP Word is using the US English dictionary even though it is not the default language ... when I go into the XP Language setting, US English is not there, yet when I go into the Tools Language setup it is checked. Does anyone know how this can be removed?

Hi Oscarse

This is a little documented pain in the proverbial. What you need to do is in MS Word go Tools|Language|Set Language. When the dialog box appears make sure that English(UK) is at the top of the list & then uncheck the "Detect Language Automatically" tickbox. This should then default documents to English(UK).

Hope this helps.

AFAIK, it's not possible to remove the US dictionary; all you can do is try to suppress it.

You need to make sure your system locale is set to UK and set the Office Language to UK via Office Tools (I think that's in OfficeXP as well as Office2003)

The big problem occurs when you open a DOC file which is uses the US dictionary; Word does not seem to indicate a change of language and does not revert back UK automatically, even if detect language automatically is disabled.

It is compounded further because Document Scanning and Imaging is only US, and any scanned file defaults to US irrespective of Word existing defaults.

Thanx people but the US dictionary still exerts itself ... color colour are both shown as correct.

In a new document go Tools ->Language ->Set Language. Set language to English (UK), make sure that the "Detect Language Automatically" tickbox is unchecked, then click on "Default..." and click Yes. Click OK to exit the dialogue box.

Before you close Word go to tools ->options and on the saved tab make sure that "Prompt to save Normal template" checked.

Go file ->exit (don't use the X) and don't save the current document. When prompted "Changes have been made that affect the Global tempalte, Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?" click yes. Next time you open Word English (UK) should be your default language.

Cheers.

If it's made by Microsoft, you can't get rid of US English, which is what they speak, after all. You can minimise its intrusions using the methods given above.
