I'm owner of an old 712/60 which would perfectly fit into my little network blah. problem is the lan interface, which denies working...
I used all the technical documents by HP and have plenty of Unix-books at home so my question:
1. How do Iget the lan interface to be up?
lanscan gives:
... Net-Interface ..
... Name-Unit State ...
... lan0 DOWN ...
but it needs to be up.
2. lanadmin reset gives my weird errors I need to write down.

You need to run

#ifconfig lan0 up

this will bring your lan nterface up.

Cheers

#ifconfig lan0 up didn't work. would have been to easy...
lanadmin gives me weird errors:
#lanadmin reset
Resetting LAN interface to run self-test
error: expected primitive 0x06, got DL_ERROR_ACK
dl_error_primitive = 0xe8
dl_errno = 0x04
dl_unix_errno = 16
Unable to reset LAN interface.
Lan Interface test mode. LAN interface NetMgmt ID = 4

What is that?

Next problem is routing under HP-UX... I'm used to Linux and Solaris but it shouldn't be that much of a difference, or?

Queenie's advice (welcome to Queenie :) by the way) is correct as far as I can see and should work if your lan interface is ok.

Not to worry about routing until you get lan0 up and running.... (if you're used to Solaris shouldn't be much of a problem anyway)

what does ifconfig report by the way?

You say Queenies advice did not work yet failed to explain why?
If ifconfig could not be found check that you have the deirectory /usr/sbin in your $PATH variable.
If it is something else then please let us know.

ifconfig is doing nothing as far as I can see. i edited netconf and after rebooting ifconfig lan0 gave me the address, submask, etc. i wanted the interface to have. the only problem: The interface isn't UP! And using ifconfig lan0 up didn't work!

Next step was using lanadmin (reset) to reset the interface after connecitng the box to my network. I found that in some of the HP-docu I have lying around. The output is 2 mails above.

The next thing would be the question which interface to use, tried both ways of connecting to my lan, namely AUI->BNC plug and TP (RJ-45). None of them did work, either. There is only one interface (lan0) but it seems to support both AUI and TP (?)
My $PATH is set up properly...

thanks alot

Christian

btw the output of ifconfig:

#/usr/sbin/ifconfig lan0

lan0:flags=862<BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTIPLE>
inet 192.168.21.98 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 192.168.21.255

chenn,

what is the IP address and netmask of a working host on that network?
Mike
michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com

sample working host: inet addr:192.168.21.99 Bcast:192.168.21.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

that looks fine then, I was thinking that you might have the network number portion of the IP or the netmask set incorrectly -- but no.

Your thinking on AUI and RJ45 connections is correct, they are both the same as far as the lan card is concerned.

In your position I would suspect a h/w problem.

Have you tried connecting to a port on the hub (that you *know* to be working) using another cable (that you also know to be working)?

If that doesn't work it points to the card itself.

Do you have another card you can try in that machine?

Can you try that card in another machine?

Actually I'm not that well equipped with cables and stuff but the few ones I own are fine (actually I took them to "my" company to test them...). I have no other card and as this workstation seems to have everything onboard it is not that easy to build in a new one. Btw there is no hub in my network, just a bunch of antique computers making too much noise...
I have to check whether there are any PCI or whatever slots in that HP box for connecting a lan card... if so, I'll start a new threat about "How to get a new card running" or something like that...

no hub....

are you trying to connect two computers using a single rj45 cable?
Mike
michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com

Yeah, because the other computers are hanging on a good old BNC-T-connected-end-terminated-kinda-thing... The RJ-45 was just for test purposes, but there is no reason why it shouldn't work with two computers. Or?
Btw the HP-UX is supposed to become a member of the BNC-mob, too. Therefore the AUI-2-BNC adapter...

it is crossed... i'm into soldering and stuff.

sorry, missed the whole BNS business.....

but yeah -- you have to cross the rj45 cables if you don't have a hub... I've never done that mind you.

so what's the problem then? does anything get put into syslog when you try and bring the interface up? are you doing this via sam by the way?
Mike

The machine is quite antique, so there ain't no SAM or X(yet) or whatever. the system is really minimalistic, there ain't no manpages on it (1GB sCSI-disk), just the basic unix tools and my favorite editors. To get the network running is important for installing stuff, as I don't have any external SCSI drives... and so far it is not working that fine...
I'll try to contact a SysAdm near my place, so that we can just plug the box in his network and see whats going on.

I bought some 712/60's but they are all password protected. How can I re-set the password? I'm not too up on Unix, but will re-formatting the hard drive and doing a fresh install of the software do the trick, or is there something else I need to be looking at? Any ideas (good ones, anyway) will help. Thanks in advance.

generalissimo,
If you are going to reload, that will do the trick, but if not, if you boot into single user mode you can then change the root passwd.

boot the system and stop the auto boot by pressing the space bar

type in bo pri isl

type in hpux -is

then change the passwd

passwd root

Hope this helped.

I have managed to get my hands on A hp-ux 712/60, and I have tried to scan the Internet for mauals etc, even the HP site didn't seem to have a manual for this model any longer, is the anyone that can point me in the right direction?

Also, has anybody installed Linux Red Hat 7.0 on this model, if so I would appreciate any links etc for this as well.

I tried crystaln's root password reset and it worked a treat, thanks for that!
