Hi.

I have had a network between two PCs setup. They both run Windows 2000 Professional.

They were working now but now they are not. They are both of the same workgroup yet when I try and access them via 'My Network Places' I get 'Workgroup is not accessable'.

It was working fine two days ago then I went to use it today and it has stopped. I dont think I have fiddled with it but I probably have done.

Thanks
Oli M

Check the nics on the back of the computer. Do the lights light up? Are the nic's talking ok over the cable? Unplug the nic and plug it back in again (reseat the connection). If it worked before and doesn't now (no software changes made), that suggests a hardware problem with the physical components of your network.

If all else fails, put NETBEUI as a protocol on both. It requires no configuration so you know you can't mess up a "setting". If netbeui works, that will validate your hardware as operational.

- try to ping a pc from the other
- check the cable/hub (with another one)
- check the nic (same remark as above, look at the lights)
- ping your card on 127.0.0.1 (if it answers, it does not mean that it works fine, but if no response, change it)
- check nic status in device manager, reinstall network card if pb
- check network config
- checked if there is no firewall installed
- try to map a shared drive directly with its network path
- add entries in the host
...

correct me if i am wrong, but doesn't my network places use netbios to browse the network, so check to make sure you have netbios enabled in tcpip properties.

Thanks everyone.

Both cards are working as they both communicate with each other. (I have checked the sent and received data).

Zonealarm is installed so I am gonna remove that and see what happens.

Should both IP's be static? Oh and Netbios is installed.

I have a feeling that the firewall could be the trouble.

Thanks again
Oli M

zonealarm can cause problems, did you recently install it? can you ping the other computer? are the pcs connected directly to each other or are you using a device to connect them such as a router or hub? if these computers don't connect to the internet you don't need zonealarm

Thanks everyone.

It was Zonealarm and I have got rid of it.

I really appreciate everything you have all done :)

Another problem has occured. On my other computer I cant get it to connect to the internet via my host one.

Any ideas?

please be more specific as to how your network is setup,
ie. how you connect to the internet, using a router, dns servers, etc.

thanks

We connect with a LAN and the host uses a Dialup connection. Both com's work perfectly and can access each other fine.

do you get a dial tone? try connecting a phone to the line you are using and dial the number to see if you get a response.

On my host comp. it works fine. On the other comp. it just goes straight to the error page on IE.

just to review your setup

- you have two computers, lets call them pc1 and pc2 setup on a lan and they communicate fine

- pc1 dials out to the internet via modem and connects fine

- you are tring to connect pc2 through pc1's connection to the internet

ok, do you have internet connection sharing enabled? how are you trying to connect from pc2

I did the Internet Connection Wizard and tried to connect PC2 to PC1 via the LAN option. However I then tried to connect to the Internet via PC2 however was greeted with the 'Page cannot be displayed'. It didnt even wait to try and establish a connection.

Thanks for all your help
