How can I configure my PCs so i can access the internet from any PC connected to my LAN having a PC with a modem that serves as the connection to the ISP ?
well the way I did it, if you are using a dialup modem, is to have the modem, connected to the net as usual, and then have your NIC connected to all the other computers, youc an do several things, you can have your computer act as a gateway, or you can download a Proxy server, or you can use Wingate3(at wingate.com) which works very nicely, but for some it may be a hassle to setup, check out tucows.com, and find proxy servers under the win98 section, there are hardware options, but none of which I know of which would work with a Dialup modem, and even if there was, it would be much more costly than just using software, there are a few Proxy server I know of that are freeware, (some are free if you just want 2 computers to share) but are limited capability, like almost all will support either email and

If your PC's are already in a microsoft network, the only requirement is the PC that hosts the modem must be W98SE. Then there is an article in the MSKB how to share it (sorry, can't remember the number). I've used this for small config's up to 4 PC's, worked OK.
if you dont have Win98SE you need to get one of those proxy servers, or something similar, Win98SE uses ICS, Internet Connection Sharing, I've never used it but I've heard from a few people that they have disliked it.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=

Sygate works quite well. There is a free version limited in the number of simultanious connections. Sygate also serves as a modest firewall and is very easy to setup.
