Hi all. I have to say that without all of you tek-tips helpers I believe we end users would blow up the computer world. At least I would.

Problem one is I have a 3.3ghz 8 GB ram WIN 7 PRo and using a netgear WNDR3700 N600 router, and a x586 32bit PC with 512mb ram XP PRO using the same router. The icon on the taskbar shows an internet connection at 1.0GBps but IE won't work, Norton won't work either to update/scan for viruses. I ran ccleaner and allowed it to fix registry entries and clean up all temp files. I even read a listing here on tek-tips re how-to show hidden network adapters. I even RESET the machine with the little reset button. The old network card is still listed in the hidden adapters. DO I manually removed the old card's listings?

Problem two is when I go into ADD/REMOVE in control panel there are no listings at all. Some of the programs on the 586 pc work and others don't. The 586 had HDD problems and the computer store agents put in a new hdd and transferred everything to the new hdd. How do I get the listings back?

Problem three is I am trying to install a later version of IE but can't. I tried getting a starter file to run from a flash drive but since I can't get to the internet on the 586 I can't get a newer version. I CAN PING! Why can't I get IE to connect?

My husband hooked his nic cable to the router and all worked BEFORE the hdd had probs. How can I check, or setup, the 586 to work off the other pc's internet/domain/?

I have been working on this for 3 days now trying everything I can think of and am about ready to chuck it all in. I really hate having to start over and reinstall all the programs again. Any helps you can give me I will appreciate greatly.

Have you tried dns flush, and winsock repair? try these commands at a command prompt one at a time: press enter after each command.

c:\>ipconfig /release

c:\>ipconfig /flushdns

c:\>ipconfig /registerdns

c:\>ipconfig /renew

c:\>netsh winsock reset catalog

c:\>netsh int ip reset reset.log

c:\>netsh winsock reset

Hi rclarke250 and thanks for your reply.

I did the commands above but the commands with "catalog" and "reset.log were not recognized.

I ran the ie8 installer but there was the error "The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll" came up. I still cannot get on the internet.

Also, I did the commands for devmgr from the forum to show "dimmed" hidden hardware under network adapters and uninstalled those windows would allow. I still have internet connection at speed 1.0Gbps. It baffles me.

I checked the add/remove list again and it is still empty. I checked the registry with regedit earlier but did not have ... Microsoft/Current Version ... So I could not change any of the entries from "-1" to "0" to see if the list would repopulate. So that is a dead issue.

Alas I must say I'm going to have to format and reinstall all. I know there are too many problems to keep trying to solve them all.

I appreciate your help very much. No more help is needed as I know now what I'll be doing one day this week.

Try creating new administrator accounts in both OS's and log in under them. See if the problems persist. If not, you can try your updates there and install/run malwarebytes. That would also tell you that only the profile is corrupted or infected.

nelljack: What Service Pack of XP is installed? You should have SP3.

Do you have an IP address? ipconfig will show you this. If you have 169.254.xxx.xxx address your pc is not connected to a server that can issue you an address so you can get on the internet.
