Hello,

Hopefully someone can assist me.
Up until recently I had a perfectly good functioning LAN & internet connection between my 2 PCs (W2K). Now I only have the LAN connection, but can no longer access the internet via LAN from the Client PC !! Internet connection to the Host is no problem and if I connect direct to the Client PC (take it off the LAN), I also have an internet connection.

LAN Setup:
On both LANs I'm using "Client for MS Network, File & Print Sharing, NetBui and TCP/IP". If I delete the NetBui I lose the LAN connection altogether.
"Enable Internet Connection Sharing" & "Enable on-demand Dialing" on the internet connection are activated. I had static addresses on both machines with the same SubNet Mask (255.255.255.0) and on the Client I used the Default Gateway address of the Host.
IE connection for the Client is set to "LAN" and I'm using "Automatically detect settings" - nothing else is checked.
The Client can ping it's own IP address (192.168.1.2) and Name ("second") and those of the Host PC. The Host can NOT ping it's own IP address (192.168.1.1) and Name ("computer"), but can ping those of the Client.
Saw on another post that I should try to ping 64.233.167.147, however didn't work.

Event Viewer tells me, when I attempt to connection to the internet with the Client :"The browser has received a server announcement indicating that the computer SECOND is a master browser, but this computer is not a master browser." or "The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer COMPUTER that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{226E041E-C240-4507-. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced."

What I have done to date to attempt to fix this:
I have played with all combinations of addresses including automatic assigned addresses without any luck.
I have uninstalled the adapters and reinstalled the latest drivers (3COM Ethernet 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX).
Re-installed IE 6.0 (+ latest updates) - no results
Deinstalled and reinstalled Norton Antivirus & Firewall (ensured that the other PC is included in the exemption list).
Ran Micorosoft AntiSpyware and XoftSpy. Found and deleted a few SpyWare bugs - no result.
Ran HiJackThis, posted to a forum and deleted suggested files - no result.
Ran IspFix to see if the problem was in the Winsock - no result

Is this a Virus/SpyWare problem or have I received an MS update that has set things askew ?

Grateful for any clues ??

(Ignore the XP specific stuff. You want the WinsockFIx utility to rebuild your Winsock service.)

Hello Bill,

Thanks for the advice, however after applying it to both machines, I still can't connect. What do you suspect the problem is and and any further advice is really appreciated

Nik

Isn't it significant that the Host machine can't ping itself ? Doesn't this indicate that there is a real IP problem ?

Nik

There must be for the machine doing the ICS hosting a gateway and DNS reference to itself. The IP and DNS and Gateway address should be 192.168.0.1

There must be on any client, a DNS and gateway reference to the host. (192.168.0.1)

You can see the confusion here:

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

It is unclear if you attempted static IP addressing, or it just got it wrong. See:
But start with all adapters set to "Obtain an IP address automaticly...."

Additional thought: This can occur if there is a physical network connection issue between the ICS Host and the clients.

Reboot all switches, routers, modems, etc..
Check the cabling.

Hello Bill,

I am still having trouble connectioning to the internet from the Client.
Deinstalling and reinstalling NetBui doesn't seem to have any affect. I still had the problem with the Host not being able to ping

the itself, so I experimented with the Norton Firewall settings. Under Network (Firewall) when I added every know address

suddenly the Host could ping itself, but not he Client - reversed roles ! So I deleted the Firewall altogether and now both

machines can ping themselves and each other - Eureka !
However, believe it or not, the Client can still NOT access the internet.

Does this indicate where the problem could now lie ?
Is there a program that could be blocking this access ?
Is there a bloody setting within IE for either the CLient or Host machine that could be blocking the connection ?
Does "IP Routing Enabled" only on the Host and not the Host have anything to do with this ?

Any ideas where to go from here ?

I have noticed this same situation w/ several Win2k PCs that have recently been upgraded to SP4. Somehow the PCs had internet, email, and TCP/IP printing until the reboot after the Win2k SP4 update. I don't know if this is spyware or a virus either, but I do know that re-imaging the 3 PCs has fixed the LAN connection but no Internet, email, or TCP/IP printing problems!
