Many Americans (I don't know about folks in other countries) might also know the term as being related to chili. Three Alarm chili is supposed to be really friggin' hot.

I live in the southern US (NC) and have been familiar with the term "Three Alarm" for as long as I can remember, just through cultural references. I didn't know exactly what it meant until reading Skip's post, but I think many Americans would know that it refers to a bad fire and therefore get the joke.

Then again, judging by the length of this thread, I might be wrong. [tongue]
