Well...I've gone and bought a new computer (Dell XPS) that's running Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

KABOOM! My two LaCie 500gb (branded as "Big Disk") do NOT work with SP2. And LaCie ADMITS it on their web site....

Installed....did everything right, including trying to update drivers from their web site (although LaCie says NOT to try if one has SP2...we're supposed to WAIT!)

All that happens is that when I try to boot up, the computer stops the process with an on-screen explanation that it has found something that might harm the computer, and therefore it ceases to boot.

Yes, LaCie says they are STILL working on new drivers....Egads, it's 2005 already...SP2 been out for a while, and I've had these drives for 9 months.

LaCie doesn't seem to be moving forward...so I'm pleading for help. Anyone have any ideas/solutions?

Thanks very much!

Cheers,
John

JonyDirk,
According to the LaCie website there is a Firmware update for your model to correct the sp2 issue.

You could split the drives into multple partitions (temporaryly) to get around the size barrier vs. sp2, then install the OS and then do the Firmware update. Then reprep the drives to thier full size.

....or slave them in a PC that does not have sp2 and do the firmware upgrade from there.

Thanks for your notes....but...

The LaCie support "driver" page has these notes, which to me indicate that they do NOT support SP2. This is a direct, copied statement:

"For the most reliable update, please use a computer that has a Firewire 400 interface, and one that has NOT been updated to XP SP2. If you cannot meet these requirements, please delay your update to XP SP2."

When I contacted LaCie Tech Support, they responded with this e-mail:

"Hello,
You will want to find a computer that is still running XP or XP SP1 and update the firmware there.

I tried updating on my PC running XP SP2, and all it does is crash it upon boot-up. I detached my LaCie drives, and went into device manager to uninstall the drivers.

Back to square one, at least for me...

Anyone have any suggestions, really appreciated....

Cheers,
John

In your Control Panel "Add/Remove", can you uninstall SP2? If so, you can use the Restore disk (that came with your computer) to restore your system when you are done with the firmware upgrade.

Oh gosh....boy, I am not a brave soul when it comes to computers.

This Dell XPS is brand new, and came with XP SP2 resident. I tremble at the thought of me going in there and uninstalling SP2...I even tremble at the thought of me going in there to LOOK! I've been a "consumer" of PC's since 1982 (yes, my little film company bought an IBM back then with one of those 5-1/4" floppy drives) all the way through learning little bittie bits of DOS etc (sorta like owning an English car that always breaks down, you learn a little of this and that but you can never become a NASCAR or Formula One mechanic, that's for sure)....and have spent hours and hours of trying to fix things that I experimented with....so uninstalling a resident-configured SP2...nope.

Thanks for your help though. It's really appreciated. Especially since the folks that should really be helping with this are sitting around LaCie!

Cheers,
John
