Hi,

I made a "movie" of my video; a 5 GB avi file. My portable hard drive is a 120 GB, with 65 GB of free space. I try to drag the file to the portable hard drive, and I get a message that there is not enough space on the hard drive. This is impossible, and I have no problem dragging smaller files to the portable.
1)Why won't it let me drag the 5 GB movie to the portable
2) Can I export it as a more compressed file?
3) If not, what can I do to compress the file so it plays (fits) on a DVD? or do I HAVE to put it to tape, only.

Thanks

What's the format of your portable drive: FAT16, FAT32, NTFS?

I'm not sure. It's a Western Digital 120GB IDE hard drive with 2.0 usb connector. I didn't have to format it. I don't know how to find out.

Um....

do a properties check on that drive ( right click on drive letter, Properties from the pop-up menu )

The FAT32 format can only support files up to 4GB. In some OSes, the practical limit for FAT32 is actually 2GB, due to a roll over to negative numbers. In either case, your file is too big for FAT32.

As said above, your problem is the FAT32 format of your drive.

As for other outputs that are compressed, the obvious one that comes to mind is MPG. Try different export settings or consult your manual.

If you have trouble figuring out, search online for AVI to MPG converters--try download.com or something.

Hi,

I tried an AVI to MPEG converter. I get an error message "unable to load the source file. The stream might be corrupt or the data file is unsupported." AAAA! It's an avi to MPEG converter.

How do I have Premiere Pro export as MPEG movie? I cannot find it in preferences or video rendering options. I can't believe I'm stumped!

What you probably have is an AVI Type-1 DV file, not a compatible AVI format with some AVI-MPG converters.

This is from the tmpgenc webpage: "TMPGEnc can not read AVI file with DV format. The file is probably Type-1 DV format. The format is not supported by TMPGEnc. Type-1format has different structure from AVI format. TMPGEnc can not read the format since TMPGEnc does not support DirectShow. To solve this matter, try to save the captured or edited file as Type-2 DV format, however, there are still chance not to be able to read the file if you are using general IEEE1394 board without codec for VFW."

Try the Canopus AVI converter, then use its output to convert to MPG. Check out:
