KVM Switch Problems??

Hi,

I have got three 9000 series Compaq Racks housing various different Compaq servers. I have got a KVM switch in each of the three racks and have two monitors, keyboards and mice (one controlling one of the KVM switches and the other controlling the other two KVM's).

My problem is....I want to be able to run all three KVM switches on on monitor, keyboard and mouse and I know that you can attach the KVMs to a single KVM so one acts as a master and the others as slaves. I have even managed to do this already with one of the KVMs and I am happily running two switches with one monitor set-up.

When I tried to put the other KVM on the master switch it sees that it is there and I have set that port up as a 8-port KVM but when you try and go through the various servers on that slave switch it keeps showing the same server all the time??

I thought it might be a firmware problem as the master switch is at version 1.5.0.0 and the one slave switch that is working is at version 1.6.0.0 The slave switch that dosn't work is at version 1.5.0.0 I want to flash it but can't find out anywhere how to do it.

If anyone can help I would be very appreciative as this is driving me mad!!

Cheers.

Hi pshankland,
I have the same problem too...but i didn't solve simply by upgrading the firmware of the switch... i didn't solve at all actually.
Did you find a solution?
Thankyou,

You are not alone!! I too have the same problem. I have logged it with compaq Support and I am waiting for an answer. When I have one I will post it here.

I have managed to get the two switches working off just the one main one now after many hours of fiddling about!!

Unfortunatly, I can't quite remember how we did it. If you press the Print Screen key twice, then it takes you to the menu of the switch that the server you are working on is physically on. From here I enabled the server console port and gave it a name. I then came out of all the menus and went onto the main switch and enabled the port there and gave it a name. This has seemed to work.

Hope this helps??

I think the answer to these queries is :
Connect the port 1 of the master KVM to the input port of the slave unit
Then switch the slave unit on
Then go into the setup screen on the master KVM (print scrren, F2 for Advanced, hit the rightarrow to go across to the setup and down to devices)
Then On port 1 set it up as 8 port (scroll using plus and minus keys)
Then escape out and go to reset on the "commands" menu.
Then switch the slave box OFF and then back ON and you should see the slave units appear in the print screen list now.
I know this is the latest KVM unit fix, the older ones use the same principle but if you want the instructions please mail me directly !

The best way to daisy chain compaq KVM switches is to change your requirement and go with no daisy chaining. It will ultimately burn you if you are worried about supportability and up-time.
