Here is the message that my computer gives when it crashes periodically...

Stop 0x1E (0xC0000005, 0xEB4432D1, 0x00000000,0x00000028) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Address EB4432D1 base at EB440000, DateStamp 39A9fb06 - CLASSPNP.SYS

My computer is a Compaq 7998 - 1GHz AMD Athlon, 512 MB RAM, two IDE controllers on system board. On primary IDE controller is a Maxtor 94091U8 40B drive. On secondary IDE is a CD-RW drive and a DVD drive.

I have a Promise ATA-100 IDE controller with bus mastering installed. Attached to this is a Maxtor 98198H8 80GB drive.

The system has had this configuration for over a year now. This problem started happening about 1 month ago. To the best of my knowledge I haven't changed anything at the system level.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I have a very similar problem to you. Although mine shows the file pcc_pcw.sys and not classpnp.sys.

Did you find a solution to this yet?

I've run system tests on the motherboard, ram, video, etc. and there have been no reported errors.

I have the exact same error message with the same file (classpnp.sys). I also have the same IDE Controller and Hard drive as you. I think we may have found the common link.

this isnt a multiprocessor system is it?
what OS is it 2000? what service pack are you at? FatesWebb

if you have a compaq then you can probably download the diagnostic utilities and check your memory and your Hard Drive. I think it is the memory.

I also had this problem with a Maxtor HDD (Different model from you guys) and an on board Promise controller and I only get it while running WIN2000 (its ok with XP), as I saw this mentioned on another forum somewhere, and it turns out it is a problem with the Maxtor HDD, It had an error with the on board S.M.A.R.T

So go to

http://www.maxtor.com

and get hold their POWERMAX diagnostics, run all the tests and make a note of the error message, they seem to have a good replacement procedure, and I am currently in the process of getting a replacement HDD.

in addition I found this also and it is exaclty the problem I had,

I must stress it wasnt the Advanced test on POWERMAX which finds the problems it is the 90second test which throws up the error
