KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED during instalation

First of all sorry for my poor English (I'm from Spain)
I have a problem with a computer... someone was trying to re-install windows 2k, and he reseted the computer during this process. The problem is that when he tried again to go on with the instalation, during the phase in which install program is looking for new hardware itappear the BLue Screen with the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED message, STOP 0x0000001E and all those typical things I have readen thousands of times during last 48 hours.
The it says "Volcando memoria fisica al disco duro" in English i supose it is something like "Tranfering physical memory into hard disk" counts from 0 to 100 and reboots... and the PC gets into a bucle or ringlet, i mean a repetitive process.
I've read that it can have to do with gina dll s, and maybe the solution is to change the register from recovery console, but i've never do that, and i only use simple commands from recovery consolo like dir, type and a few more. (the ones wich are similar to my dear MS-DOS)

It means that the registry hives were not able to be written to the hard disk.

Do a clean install of Win2k. You could, in the alternative, try the registry repair utility from Microsoft, but a clean installation would be my best advice.

Thanks for ur help bcaster, I wouldnt mind to do a clean install, but in this case... would all the old programs be transfered to this clean install? i'm afraid they wouldnt, and i would like to have the desktop as it was before, more or less.
Do u mean a clean and new install in order to repair the other register..? I'll try the repair utility first... although I dont trust too much in it. Any other sugestion? What would happen with a new install?

Hi again bcastner...
I've been reading about the repair utility.... First u have to download XP boot disks... after that u have to change then usind the repair utility.. then reboot the corrupted computer where u want to repair the w2k register using XP boot disks... hmmm.. sounds not good.. i wouldn't like to get into a bigger problem, i'm sure u know what i mean.

How should i proceed if i choose the "clean install" option? do u think i could get something good? i mean , do u think it could install over previous w2k and recover all programs? or u think it is better if i do a parallel install and try to repair the other register?

Sorry for my low level.. but.. it is not my computer where i have the problem, and i dont want to make a fatal error, because it is not my information the one which could be erased. I want to be a bit sure of what i do.

I do not know how much is on the disk without backup. Assuming a fair amount that you do not want to lose, I would:

1. First do the registry repair. It looks worse than it in fact actually is. Do not be frightened by using the Windows XP boot diskettes; the point is to use the XP version of Recovery Console.

Sorry for bothering u again bcastner.. I ve read all the links u have sent me, and i like the idea of an in-place upgrade (in fact, this is because at this moment i dont have six new diskettes , so i cannot do the repair method until tomorrow).
The problem is, that when i read the procedure to make an in-place install:

i can read the following:

When you are prompted to repair the existing Windows 2000 installation, press R. Windows 2000 Setup performs an in-place upgrade of the existing installation. Note that you might lose some of your customized settings for the system files.

I though when u said an inplace install u meaned i should choose the option "New Install" or something like that and then type the same directory, although i supose now, it could be a total disaster because it would install a new windows over the previous and without take into consideration the previous software installed (dont know if it is in this way).
The fact is that the inplace install choosing the option "R" is what i've been doing all this morning... and it looks right untill it gets the "Looking for hardware components" phase, where i get the Blue Screen of Death when it has been looking for 7 minutes more or less for hardware components... and it starts the repetitive process... i supose i have no more choice that try the repair option with the XP diskettes tomorrow.. but is there any other suggestion trying the install option, in order i can try more things until tomorrow?

I know i must look like a silly and awful man, but i have one more question
I ve read the page u sent:

And i think it is a manual procedure to reapir the register, as i read, i can see u copy the files in Repair directory into the system directoy.. i mean, u restore some files.. but.. isnt it what the manual and authomatic reapir options from Repair install menu try?

And one more thing.. i'm not sure what u meaned in one of ur previous mails... may i execute the repair utility using w2k boot disks instead of XP boot disks? The repair download takes only 93k, is that the reapir utility or is it a pre-file in order to download the utility? i dont want to execute it in my not corrupted computer, in order to avoid more disasters..., but i supose it is not the repair , or is it?

You most certainly can do an in-place upgrade with the Win2k CD or diskettes. You only need the XP for a registry repair.

i have to recognize i'm loosing control... i've tryed to execute the repair utility file (which is an exe file, chkreg.exe or sth like that) form repair console, but of course it doesnt recognize, as it only recognizes console commands... the situation is the following...
have no diskettes, i can delete somethings and get one or two, have some new CDs but no more... have only w2k boot diskettes and w2k cd... have a good computer (the one i'm typing in) and a corrupted computer.... whn i try a in-palce install choosing R option when it detects there is a previous instalation i get into a repetitive processs... what can i do? what do i do with chkreg.exe file?

I know i can do a inplace install with w2k boot diskettes (i've been doing that all the day ) , and now i can see i really need XP boot diskettes in order to execute repair utility..i'm afraid i can do no more than wait until tomorrow, get six new diskettes and try the repais utility.. isnt it?
Everytime i try a inplace install i get into a repetitive process... is there any other way to try it, without trying the Repair previous install option in install menu?

Well.. u propsed 2 solutions:
1.- Inplace install
I've tried it, but as i said before, it becomes into a repetitve process, because when install program is looking for installed components and hardware apeears the BSDO

2.- Repair utility
I ve tried also, but the same result... it executes repair utility, boting with XP disks.. choose Repair.. says it is repaired, put out disks, reboot, and when it reboots , starts the sae proccess of the last 3 days, that is.. Windows 2000 is initiating... after that Green screen of install program, insert W2000 CD please.. and says.. "searching for installed components and hardware" or sth like that .. and after ten minutes KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

So.. what else can i do?

I only can think about another solution:
Try a new w2k install, no an in-place install, but a parallel instal.. and once i've chosen it.. I specify the same directory where my system was... but i'm afraid it suposes all my software there will be ignored and I would have windows without programs because it would creat a new registry. Is that right? Is there any thing more I could do in order to avoid this? Thanks in advanced

The problem is more important than I though... when I press F8 in order to choose Safe Mode, or Safe Promp Mode or things like that... it always shows the green install screen and ask me for windows CD no matter what i choose, and always starts looking for hardware components and always gets stuk.. again again and again.. i'm getting crazy.. please help me!!!!!!

I mean , i cannot get any prompt but the repair console... the only way to avoid the step of install screen and then stucks is choosing Repair console when i boot with diskettes. All the other option send me to the install screen and after that the error.

Unplug everything connected to the computer.
Open the case, and remove everything but the video adapter, and RAM.

Start the machine and make the first CD Rom device first in boot order.

Restart the machine with your Win2k CD in the CD Drive.

I'm afraid we r not understanding each other
I'll try to be as claer as i can.. sorry for my english again.

Let's see what has happened:
1. Computer was working properly before all this mess under W2K
2. Somebody (I really dont know why) tried an in-place install with W2K, although it was working properly.
3. The same man, reseted computer during installation

The actual situation:
1 It doesnt matter the way i boot my computer (in F8 option) the only thing i get is .. green install screen (as if it was going to continue the installation executed when it was reseted) but when it gets to "Looking for installed components..." it takes 5 or 10 minutes (i mean the grey window with the blue bar getting bigger) and after that the BSOD and the error mentioned... then "volcado de memoria ficica" (trnasfering physical memory to hard disk) or sth like that in english.. and counst from 0 to 100 anr restarts. And a repetitive proccess

2 If i dont instert any diskettes.. it asks me for W2K install CD and it can be hours and hours in all this reiterative porccess.. if I insert boot diskettes and choose repair option, it tries to repair once he thinks he has reapired he restarts and again the same mess.

3 The only thing i can do to avoid this procces is start the recovery console, i ve tried boot dikettes, in place instalation choosing repair option, and also repair utility for W2K using XP boot diskettes.

The things i think could do:

Option A: Try a new parallel install but in the same directory (specifing the same directory of the previous intall) : I supose it could be a total disaster as it could create a new regustry and i would have software into the computer but it wouldn appear in my desktop.

Option B: Try a parallel install but in another directory... once i have done it, boot the computer and choose the "new windows" when appear the multiple OS menu, go to Promp in accesories, in my new windows, and try to repair with any utility the other registry. If i could do that, then i would delete the windows i installed.

Any ither suggestions or any remarks to all this?

I have a similar problem also..
I've got the same message KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED without any information after it.. It says if a driver is mentioned, disable the driver, or turn off BIOS Caching and Shadowing. Also, it suggests trying a new Video Adapter.
So far, I have disabled all of the caching, shadowing, and did the repairs you suggest here. I still get the error. What happens is I get the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional screen, and the progress bar gets about half to 3/4 of the way through and goes to this error.
I've contacted "BestBuy" and he said it would either be memmory (If it was a physical problem) or I need to reinstall completely. I don't want to do that, if I can avoid it.
I'm wondering (in my case) if I shouldn't purchase an AGP Video card (since I have an AGP Slot) and see if that would fix the problem for me.
Some extra information about the computer. I have an AMD Processor 1800 XP. A Biostar M7VIG board with onboard video. 512 MB DDR-Ram installed. a Maxtor 80GB Harddrive with about 20GB free (one thing it suggested was inadequate disk space). I've been playing a video game that requires a 3D Hardware Accelerated Graphics with 16MB VRAM (which I don't have onboard, I'm sure). Also, I downloaded various patches using a program called GFI LANGuard. However, due to the circumstances behind my crash, I doubt the patches were to blame. I was attempting to play a saved game, and it encountered an error. I accidentally hit ESC (Debug) instead of terminating the program. Before the debugger completely opened, I hit CTRL-ALT-Delete, and my screen went to gibberish. Part blue, part green and red and black, and the bottom still showed the screen for the game. I ended up having to reset (warm boot) my computer, and that's when the error started.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I fixed my problem with the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED error, and am offering this up as a suggestion. My original error came when I tried to boot up, and subsequently when I tried to 'Upgrade from Within (repair)' Windows 2000. In my case, my external CD Writer was the cause (not sure what happened to make it kill my computer though).

So, my suggestion is this. If you have any add-ons connected to your computer (printers, scanners, external Hard drives or CD writers, etc.) Remove all of them, while you are doing the installation.. See if it will install and boot up.. Then, you can go ahead and reconnect them.. You never know, it may be something that you've got hooked up.

I think in my case, it was a combination of things.. The CD writer just happened to bear the brunt of it (the perverbial straw that broke the camel's back).
