When executing a logon script from the network (located at main branch and it is the first server in our network and main dns server) I display logonserver and it is always one of the 10 other domain servers at one of the 10 locations.
Why is my logonserver not the local one (first server) at my loaction?

i think its the first DC that replies to the authentication demand..... it happens sometimes here with our NT network.

However, if you are in Win 2000 & active directory domain, then you need to configure the physical topology of your AD domain : Sites and Services.

Which domain type do you have? if it's 2000 and the sites stuff is a problem, let us know, we'll talk u through it...

We are Windows 2000 and do use Active Directory - would appreciate any help.

Yes, I agree, if you clients are Windows 2000 or higher, they will look to Active Directory to determine where the closest DC is located for authentication.

The client uses information that the adminsitrators creates in AD Sites and Services. By default, if the administrators does nothing with AD sites and services, all clients and servers will appear to be on one LAN. This is OK for small businesses with only one site.

However, in larger environments where there are many sites connected via WAN links, it is important for the adminsitrator to configure AD Site and Services to show the different sites. The clients and servers will then use this information to find local resources.

You will need to configure all of your subnets in AD Sites and Services. Then you can lump the LAN connected sites together and create a SITE. Sites should only contain subnets that are LAN connected. Whenever there is a subnet that is connected via a WAN, a new site must be created.

After creating your Sites, you will place the appropriate domain controllers in each site. This will greatly improve your network replication topology as well as help clients use local DC's for logons.

Because these sites are defined by subnets, when the client logs in, the clients subnet will be compared the the AD sites listed. From here, the client will know what site it belongs to and will use a local DC for authentication.
