I've pluged-in my Kingston DataTraveler into an USB port this morning and it didn't start. Windows XP Pro doesn't see it as a new device / drive and the led on the flash does not light.

I remember it working a few days ago so I can't figure out the problem / how to make it work again (hopefully it isn't broken). I've also tryed it on other PCs with the same result.

If anyone has any ideas they're welcomed to share them. Thanks!

w2k/xp comes along with generic drivers, so if its not recogniced by them (and on several machines) most probably its broken.

I have seen a similar issue a lot lately, especially in an environment where network drives are used. What happens to our users a lot is that they'll use their thumb drive at home where it maps to F:, and then when they bring it to work it tries to map itself to F:, but F: is already in use. So Windows doesn't detect that and figure out that it should re-map it.

The fix in my case is to right click on My Computer, select Manage, and go into Disk Management to change the drive letter. I usually change it to Z: since that is the drive letter that is least likely to be used.

The problem is that the drive won't light up (it has an led) and Windows does not detect it at all, not even as a new hardware when I plug it in.

OK. In the cases that I have seen, the light usually doesn't come on until the drive is mounted, and it can't be mounted if it is trying to mount using a drive letter that is already taken.

I can't disagree with that, but my drive does not appear in Disk Management, so I can't change it's letter.

More likely the drive has crapped.

I had one that crapped itself recently. Bummer.

They usually go out either from an electro-static discharge, or sometimes because the pins get bent. If you can apply a slight bit of pressure one way or the other and have it recognize... GET EVERYTHING OFF OF IT RIGHT AWAY.

Also, try a different USB port, or even plugging it into a powered USB hub.
