Hi,

I've inherited a G4 PowerMac with os x 10.3.5.

The keyboard is not responding. I thought perhaps that the usb is mechanically damaged but no, I plugged in a camera and downloaded data through the port. I've the keyboard in to the local mac shop and they say it works fine on one of their machines.

Reacting from a PC background I thought I would just open a new user account in case there is some kind of policy in place denying loading of the keyboard. Well when I come to the bit where I have to input a new user name I'm stuffed. No keyboard. In a microsoft server I would just load the keyboard driver manually in the services area, is there such a thing on the Mac?

Any ideas? I don't have the os x discs.

Thanks, Don Durham

At the risk of stating the obvious - do you have another keyboard you can try? Or another port?

The question should be [red]Is it worth trying to do?[/red] not [blue] Can it be done?[/blue]

even a standard pc keyboard should work.

When I was born I was so suprised I didn't talk for 18 months

Any usb keyboard will work - doesn't have to be for mac.

You can also try another usb port or try unplugging and replugging while the machine is on.

Thanks friends,

Yes I've tried all those options. As I said the keyboard works fine on another computer and the port seems to be ok as well.

Any other thoughts?

If you have one, plug any other usb keyboard into the mac and see if it works. Sometimes, through moving, handling, etc the wire can get loose giving intermittant problems. Also plug the mouse into the usb port on the mac keyboard to check the connection. You can also try one of the other usb ports on the machine as a check.

You can try repairing permissions - hard drive/applications/utilities/disk utility. You can also check the hard drive with this, but you start up from the cd/dvd to actually run the repair program.

Hey jmgalvin!

Thanks Mate,

I've plugged the mouse into the keyboard (who woulda thought) and the key board into the now available other usb vacated by the mouse and it works!

Thanks for your invaluable help.
