Help! I have a P4 2200Mhz desktop, running XP service pack 2. The computer was running fine the other night but when I started it up ,it came to the windows login screen where my user name is already in, but when I try to put my password in the password field the cursors freezes up and I can’t do anything. Then I have to do a hard restart. I tried starting it in safe mode but the same thing happens.
I tried starting up with the XP cd in and did a repair, this seemed to be going good until the part where I had to enter the serial number in, I tried to type it in but the keyboard would not respond and after pushing any button on the keyboard the mouse would freeze up. Then I have to restart the computer and windows will resume to do the repair but whenever I hit a button on the keyboard the mouse freezes up.
The keyboard and mouse is connected to the computer by PS/2 port. I tried connecting a USB keyboard but when I restart the computer it does not recognized that there is a keyboard connected and it won’t start up. I even went into the BIOS to make sure the USB keyboard support is on. I don’t know what to do now.. I’m running out of ideas .. I can start the computer using Bart PE and can see the C drive.. is there anyway I can back up my files to an external USB harddrive from Bart PE? Someone told me that the keyboard driver might be corrupted… I would think that the XP repair would fix that..

Does the PS/2 KB work on another system, or does another PS/2 KB work on yours?

yes it does. i've tried 3 different keyboars, ps/2 and USB ones

So are you saying that your PS/2 KB works on another system, and a different PS/2 KB works on your system?

The keyboard works fine on other systems, it even works if i go into the BIOS as soon as XP loads the keyboard stops working...

Did you try the "clear CMOS" jumper? Set the BIOS for "safe", or "minimal", or whatever your board calls for. Since you can change things in BIOS means your keyboard is OK. You may have to do a re-install of Windows. Won't damage your current files.

Are you certain that you have the keyboard and mouse plugged into the appropriate ps/2 ports? If they are flipflopped Windows will act funny like you pointed out.

I recently had exactly the same problem with an industrial PC that I built with 16 PCI cards... I would enter my password and the system froze... no keyboard or mouse. The problem turned out to be a defective card that was hanging the PCI bus when board drivers try to load after login.

Try removing all non-essential cards from your MOBO. If that allows you to logon... add cards until you find the bad one. A bit tricky if you have an AGP video card and don't have a spare.

I cleared the CMOS and reset it. and i'm certain that the keyboard is plugged into the right ports. anything else i can try? has anyone tried BART PE its a Preinstalled Environment, i'm thinking if i can start up from that and then backup the files on my computer then re-install XP. any other ideas?
