When I reboot my machine it goes into scan disk and then comes up with an error messag relating to kernel32.dll, now I cannot get past this to get into windows.
Try a little "Clean Boot" troubleshooting. If you can boot in Safe Mode, do so. Then run MSCONFIG and chhose "Selective Startup" then uncheck all the boxes on the "General" screen. Now reboot. If you can get into Windows normally, then your problem is somewhere in one of your startup files (ie...Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, Win.ini, etc...) If you still can't get into Windows or if you are unable to boot in Safe Mode, try booting to a command prompt and looking in the BOOTLOG.TXT file for any system level components that fail to initialize. If you find any, you may need to manually replace them by extracting files from your Windows98 CD. I'd rather not bore you with all those details until you post your results.
You weren't that specific about which OS(although most things apply to both 9x)....

These are just "my" thoughts....and should be carefully measured against other opinions....I try very hard to impart correct info at all times.
I would also try to boot into safe mode, and if you can, start testing from there....
On startup or restart..Hold down the CTRL key during boot and the Windows 98 Startup menu will come up....choose "Safe Mode"....Try to Run Scandisk from there..

If Scandisk is running at startup, it sounds like Windows wasn't shut down properly the last time it actually worked. If you can get into Safe Mode, you can easily disable the automatic running of Scandisk at startup. Just run MSCONFIG as I had mentioned in my first reply. Then, on the "General" tab, click the "Advanced" button. Place a check in the box labeled "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown". Then click OK and try rebooting.
