Keep Together fix?

Hey everyone - I'm using CR XI connecting via an ODBC(RDO) to an Access database. The report I have pulls observations and recommendations (both memo fields) from their respective Observation ID (number) and puts them into one paragraph. Let me clarify, one paragraph per Observation ID. Example:

1. This is Observation ID #1 with the observation and recommendation.

2. This is Observation ID #2 with the observation and recommendation.

And so forth...it's basically a long report document.

I've come into a problem where we encountered a paragraph that ended up being about 3,500 characters long and it wouldn't fit on one page. I've tried various Keep Together options but nothing has seemed to work. The problem is either all the data won't show or it gets cut off at the end of a page and won't continue on the next page.

I looked through the forums for similar problems but didn't really see a solution that would fix this. Would anyone be able to lend a hand in this one? All help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Have you tried right clicking on the object -Format text and ticking the keep object together on the Common tab.

This one is often missed in this type of problem.

Thanks for the response Ian.

Yes, I have tried that one as well. I also tried a formula where if the string length was less than 2,000 it would keep the object together. The vast majority of these observations/recommendations will be less than 2,000. So I'm kind of stumped. Not sure if there is a different way to go about doing this. I would be more than happy to email a copy of the report if you'd like to see it.

Thanks again,
Chris

Is this a formula or a text box containing the two fields? If the object is too big for the page, I guess you want it to continue onto the next page? You could try unchecking the "keep object together" box and see if that helps. Or you could break this into two separate formulas based on length, and place them in separate sections where one section could move to the next page.

I've been playing around a bit more to see if anything is affecting this. I did have a formula to prevent an orphaned header. Here is some information from it:

Group Header #3a (Suppressed) - Contains a formula called SuppressFirstRecord, which is as follows:

WhilePrintingRecords;
numberVar SFlag := 1;

Details - Section is suppressed with the following formula:

whilePrintingRecords;
numberVar SFlag ;

if SFlag = 1 then
(
SFlag := 0;
True;
)
else
False;

In both Group Header #3c and Details, I have two text boxes that are identical. The first text box contains a running total to number the items. The second text box contains the Observation/Recommendation formula. Looking back on it, I'm not quite sure why I put the running total and Obs/Rec forumla in the text boxes (but I digress). Anyway, when I removed the orphaned header formulas and the running total and Obs/Rec formula from Group Header #3c, this appeared to fix my problem. Now I'm beginning to wonder if I will continue to have orphaned headers. Kind of strange...
