Hey everyone!

First off, I'm in the US (Durham, NC area). We have home wireless network, (3 laptops on wireless and one desktop). We have Time Warner Road Runner using their Motorolla Surfboard modem. That is plugged into the uplink of our linksys wireless router.

I posted this in the internet forum as well but figured I'd post it here as well since it does pertain to hardware! Arghhh! Never ending...

What happens is that intermittently, we just completely loose our internet connections, even on the desktop that is hardwired into the router. I tried calling the cable co. and of course, the minute they hear I'm using "my own" router, they tell me it's the router.

I've tried two different Linksys routers and this STILL happens. What are the chances that it's the router? A friend told me that the cable company could be scanning for non-TW routers and "flashing" their connections to make them buy TW routers.

Anyways, ANY info is greatly appreciated!

I guess that's just hearsay, too... talking to the design team.

Greg,
Yes it is in fact! While I'm not saying I don't believe him, it needs to be "documented" by someone - anyone! You would think that putting several brands to the test would show any differences that exist, and that someone would have done it by now.

Even firewolfrl who you originally quoted admits that some of the Linksys models do better to avoid the issue than others. I don't own stock in Cisco or anything, so that's not why I'm defending them. I actually have a D-Link wireless router (DI-624) at home. However, I don't like to see opinions and hearsay being spun into facts, regardless of who the target is.

gbaughma,
ROFLOL.... some of the same techs that are part of the designs for the product are also in on the bidding process. Those guys(and gals) are quite sharp and know their stuff in and out. I needed a custom built router that was different then what is normally out in the corperate market... I am not a programmer and not really a very good tech designer...but...I do have my own business. and this ended up as a government bid type job...now that is something I do understand...the only issues I had was communication and time....I could talk to a few of the techs for the design...but I did not talk to the engineering group ....never could....the whole process is a bit overwhelming....but, alas... my client was the one that ultimatly chose the winner....and it was because they had everything in place and their router design smoked everyone else (it ended up as 4 routers that talk to each other with redundancies) all these routers are desgned to be hardwired in to a rack type system using a serverbox (2 servers 1 using Windows 2003, one using (some form of linux that is programmed to work directly to the router)....if I had the money. I would have bought a setup myself ... Just to note they are providing the programming support for the system....I AM NOT A LINUX GUY....LOL

cdogg,
you are right. it does not matter the brand...if it is cheap it's just not going to work as good as the higher end routers. And to note the problem occurs most when the client is using a file type sharing program.

If I ever had to do a setup like that again I probably woud not do it...lol

chapelhillbilly,
have Time Warner Road Runner replace the Modem then have only ONE computer setup at a time to the router. you need to find out which computer is dropping the router...and this may take awhile to do.

I should have said:

"It sounds like your router. I have heard rumors of some Linksys routers not being able to handle more than 255 concurrent connections. I have also experienced router lockups under heavy load with both the Linksys WRTG54 and the BEFSR41."

Meanwhile, I'm done with this thread.

Sorry to hear the frustration, Greg. I kept the discussion professional. It may have turned into a long-winded conversation, but that happens sometimes when you are trying to learn from others.

I don't pretend to know all the answers...
