The selected users are displayed on the kde login screen, but when I log in and out again I have no login screen.
I have to press ctrl, alt & backspace to restart X (obtain the login)

I have 2 linux boxes setup the same, but only one behaves like this.

Ive checked all the log files etc.

Please Help

It sounds like something is not dying when you log out. Log in on a console after you log out and use ps to see if any X applications are still running.

Thanx Eric.
I have the ps output for when the server is normal and for when it is in a locked state (pre ctrl+alt+backspace)

Normal login processes

ps -ef | grep X11

root 8590 653 0 Apr27 ? 00:01:56 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07 -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-nRySEi
root 8618 1 0 Apr27 ? 00:00:00 /usr/X11R6/bin/xconsole -notify -nostdin -verbose -exitOnFail

Locked login processes

ps -ef | grep X11

root 8590 653 0 Apr27 ? 00:01:58 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07 -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-nRySEi

This are the processed when i'm logged in as root

root 20841 653 2 16:21 ? 00:00:01 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07 -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-nRySEi
root 20863 1 0 16:21 ? 00:00:00 /usr/X11R6/bin/xconsole -notify -nostdin -verbose -exitOnFail
root 20924 20842 0 16:21 ? 00:00:00 /bin/bash --login /usr/X11R6/bin/kde

Not an Xconsole.

Log out of so you get the hung X session, then Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a console, login and do the 'ps -fe' from there. We're looking for any kde or X processes that might still be running.
