I tried to install KB295209 running Vista Ultimate. I would not install after repeated attempts. However it knocked out my Realtek wireless network adapter. I have tried repeatedly to reinstall the driver but cannot. I keep getting the same message, "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter

The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name".

Checking the Internet confirmed that I am not alone with problems created by this "fix".

The so called patch of the patch will not install either.
Realtek offers the driver and an update, but neither will install and both display the same message displayed above.

Does anyone know how to undo the "name in use" problem so I might be able to get the network going again?

KB925902 installed on my computer running XP without a hitch and without doing any damage. It appears that only Vista is the victim.

Can you uninstall KB925902 via Control Panel/ Programs and Features/ View Installed Updates?

Is System Restore an option to return before the update was installed?

Have you tried uninstalling the Realtek drivers/ sound card, rebooting and allowing Windows to rediscover it?

Here is some more information concerning this problem that has been mentioned on Tek-Tips.

Your effort to assis is appreciated linney.

KB925902 will not uninstall as it never did install, it refuses to install on Vista. However, even though it does not install, it manages to screw up the Realtec drivers to the extent that they don't work and will not reinstall.

I have tried all of your suggestions and a whole lot more. An hour ago I pulled out my backup hard drive and used Ghost to revert to the backup that was made before Microsoft foisted KB925902 upon us.

Prior to using the backup as a clone I copied all pertinent files made prior to making the backup clone. Now I again have a working copy of Vista, complete with the ability to connect to the Internet wirelessly.

I advise everyone running Vista to avoid KB925902 until Microsoft figures it out and issues a working model.

Strange that this update is causing problems for so many people. I must be one of the luckier ones, as I have Ultimate (dual booted with XP) and the Realtek Sound Card, however KB925902 installed and functioned correctly on both systems, ans also on a couple of other machines too (non-Realtek).

I have three computers, two of which run XP and the third has Vista ultimate installed. KB925902 was installed seamlessly on the XP machines but refused to install on the Vista machine stating, "Error 8007000B. I found this suggestion online:

For the 8007000B error message try this:
1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
2. In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
3. When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
4. At the command prompt, type "fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\ ", without the quotation marks and then press ENTER.
5. Reboot your machine and try to update again.

After following the above directions, KB925902 did install. However, upon restarting the computer I was greeted with the news that new updates were ready to be installed. One of which was KB925902. I checked the installed update list and found it listed as failed four times and installed once. So I followed the same routine that allegedly brought success the day before and could not get it to install. There are now several failed attempts lested in the installed update list after the supposed successful install.

The hotfix for KB925902 will not install either. Seems that this in one that Microsoft will need to alter significantly to get it to work on their latest operating system.

I had trouble with the KB925902 update. I uninstalled it but my computer booted a lot slower (Vista Ultimate) than it had originally. I just updated to the new Realtek drivers and the boot sped up almost to pre-update norms. I am going to try the update again. I can't believe MS can screw up an update like this.

As info I am going to wait until MS issues a fix for this update. I've hidden it for now.
