I've been tasked to get a backup and recovery strategy going in my company (~3000 users).

The only problem is we are a government organisation without a heck of a lot of cash. After much searching the internet I'd resigned myself to using one of the standalone solutions - then a mate emailed me this link for enterprise class software called Indigo Backup. His organisation has been using for the last few years and is around 12000 (un)employees all ex-government.

Having tried the software it seems ok and offers centralised backup control, configuration and management.

However, it all looks a little bit too good to be true. The license says anyone, including commercial companies may use it, so it does seem ok. The guys who produce the company are a services organisation called Indigo Prime, but why would they be giving away this stuff for free?

Here's the link to the website: http:\\
Anybody got any views on this - has anyone run into this Indigo Backup software before?

Are there some better freeware enterprise class backup systems out there?

Thanks for any help guys

Main thing concerning a good backup solution is the level of support you receive when you have an issue.....and you will have issues ;-)

The software may be working for you now but, I'd seriously look into levels of support before deciding....been going since 1996 but, haven't made an impact within the backup market....why?

yeah, was worried about the level of support too.

Found out a bit more about the company now.

Looks like they mainly work in the military/government side and they don't seem to advertise anywhere!

Now what area do you think requires them not to advertise.... ;)

Asking around I've found a number of large organisations use this solution - apparently QinetiQ have done since 2001 and they think it's good.

On that basis I might try a test cell using the Indigo Backup and Grid stuff - see if there support's up to much!

Oh, still open to suggestions for other low-cost enterprise backup solutions if anyone has any?

What's "low-cost" enterprise Backup in u're vision ?
please give exact range...
Waitnig for ur answer

Ok - don't laugh, I didn't come up with the budget!

<£30 (<$55) per user

This is to include all associated hard and soft systems:

secure server space
backup software
etc...

Yep, it is crazy. . .

well with that budget it's too difficult to buy any
enterprise backup soft.
so,u need more,
but many of software give guarantee(30 days).
and if anything goes wrong they pay back, even if u aren't satisfied enough.
so,u can buy some soft(say True Image Workstation,i'm using it),and then u can complain.
got me?

Yeah no what you mean - nowt at my price range!

I'd run the complaining route - but I don't think it'll wash for 3000 users ;)

Reckon I'll try this Indigo backup software - reading the specs it looks very good, but I'm concerned that 'free' support may not be fast enough!

Either way, if you're getting an enterprise class backup system that does all the usual open file backup, sub-net locking, recovery and remote management stuff, that also happens to be free, I can't grumble too much!!!

I'll let you know whether it works

Cheers guys!

Well been trying this Indigo Backup stuff out all day - it's excellent for freeware!!!

Haven't given it a complete network test yet so I'm reserving full judgement and the loads been small today anyway, but it really beats the pants of all the mid end backup stuff out there.

Found the control software a little hard to set up, but once it's up and running it just seems to look after itself. My email support request for it was answered in 3 hours so that ism't half bad really.

All in all I've had a pretty good day - thanks for all the help guys, hopefully everything should work out ok!!
