every time i resize my browser my layers move all over the place and i'd like them to b static regardless of how i change the dimensions of the browser or resize my window. how do i keep these things from moving?
thanks

is this happening in IE or NS, cuz it usually doesn't jump in IE on resize but it does in NS. DW automatically writes a NS resize fix function whenever you insert a layer. check to see if the function shows in your coding
function MM_reloadPage(init) Ranjan
fragments of dream, weave them together

no...i just have a layer with text that moves with every resizing of the browser window...i may just give up and go with tables and forget about it. the layers would be great if they worked...but so far i dont think macromedia has it together yet on using these in a practicle sense...im thinking about going over to GoLive...i prefer adobe anyway and Golive and Livemotion seem to have it together. if theres a way to get these layers to stay static with either text or images in them...i'd appreciate it in the meantime,
thanks

I use layers all of the time with no problems - however most designers use tables. If your layers don't overlap then go to Modify>Convert>Layers to Tables once you get your page the way you like it.

Don't use nested layers and as bluranj has suggested make sure you have the resize fix JS inserted (Commands>add/remove netscape resize fix).

Layers are not well supported in many browsers - there are tricks to using them and it doesn't matter if you use GoLive or DW.

If you plan on using dynamic data (forms, surveys, shopping carts etc.) DW is the only way to go - especially with MX about to be released. I'm playing with the beta version and in only a couple of hours it looks killer.

ok...seriously, maybe i'm doing something wrong but i swear...if you're going to include an option for web design like "layers" then you should be able to control them within your page. its such a tease! i think it's insulting that this company would include the ability to have floating layers that look great while designing your page, just make sure you dont do something drastic like "re-size" your browser window or all your layers jump to new positions uncontrollably. i have yet to get an easy, simple fix for this problem and i've looked everywhere...if this company were serious about making this a real use...they would offer a "fixed position" button right in the properties inspector...hey macromedia...don't offer an option like layers if they don't work....

Layers is technically a CSS spec. Everyone will be designing in layers before long. Layers, and CSS in general has not been well or consistently supported by various browsers. Tables have the same problem to a lessor degree.

You can't blame Dreamweaver for browser problems. You have to pick your demographic and design for it. For a big site you have to create several versions of your pages for all of the browsers out there, including a few that render html into voice - there are no graphics. Needless to say, no single page design will work in all browsers.

I understand your frustration but switching editors isn't going to help. Peace

doesnt it help if you change the layers from position:absolute to position:relative or vice versa?

I git an extension called 'center layers' from the macromedia exchange, which makes your layers stick in a position, but unfortunately for some reason I dont have an 'on load' facility in the behaviours, maybe you would if you got this free extension.
