jumpstart install getting Link Down - cable problem

sort of similar to thread60-932797... I am having a weird remote install jumpstart problem. When jumping a netra (no cdrom) from another machine, I issue the following ok promptcommand...

ok boot net - install


the machine resets and starts to come up. It reads the installation disk on the jumpstart server just fine. But all of a sudden it starts with the cable problem and I have to shut off the machine to try again.... Any thoughts??

Have you tried running in.rarpd -d and/or snoop to see if you are getting any communication?

ya communication is fine during the initial boot or if I put the original hard drive in there and let it boot on its own. See I am upgrading hard drives and reinstalling the OS. Plus, how else will the boot process start from a remote machine? I actually see the Solaris installation begin off the jumpstart server, then all of a sudden it's like the eth0 gets deactivated. Weird...

I would still run a snoop in another window to watch what is happening when that occurs.

Well since I am not too familiar with doing things like that, I am going to try a different switch, maybe there is a negotiation issue there since I just put this new one on... Will let you know...

Do you have more than one network interface?

What is the output of the 'show-nets' command from the ok prompt?

If you have multiple interfaces, try selecting each interface from the show-nets output and then running your boot command again.

yes there are two interfaces. I tried selecting the second and reissuing the boot net - install command and I get the following... Eventually it boots but not to install mode. The funny thing is when I let the system boot normally without the boot net - install parameters, the machine boots fine on the network without any problems. Only during the Solaris 2.6 network jumpstart install. I will try Sol8 and 10 to see if those installation disks have the same issues and let you know.

Well it definately has something to do with the 2.6 installation package I have. I don't have any problems when I try and jumpstart Solaris 8 or 10 onto this netra. Maybe I am sharing the wrong directory on that installation disk. I will do some more research and get back to ya. Thanks for all your help so far!!

I tried reinstalling the install server on the jumpstart machine with the specific 2.6 jumpstart server software and retried to no avail. I have no idea what could be causing this but oh well..... I'll move on in a different direction..

As you see the share is working and the netra sees the 2.6 installation disk mounted in the jumpstart server. After which something is turning off the interface. Don't know what it is.

Do you have any other netra same model and have you tried jumpstarting them?

It's a T1 netra. I have another one along with this one that I jumped 2.6 onto but that was years ago, we since put Sol8 onto both of these. Now I want to go back to 2.6 on one of them for a certain test. I must have done something different back then, just can't seem to remember. I will test with sol8 and cross my fingers I suppose...

It depends on what model of the T1 you are using.

If this is a T1 105 then 2.6 5/98 is the minimum OS supported.

If this is a T1 AC200 Solaris 8 is the minimum OS supported.

So if you have the t1/105 then make sure the jumpstart image is atleast 2.6 5/98.

CA, ya they are T1-105 systems and 2.6 is from 5/98. It is the same Installation CD I used years ago to set these things up. I won't worry about it for now and revisit it later with a better frame of mind... what a day!

cool just as an fyi I found this info;

t To Install Solaris 2.6 from the CDs
1. Insert the Solaris Operating Environment Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive
and, at the OpenBoot™ PROM prompt, type:
2. Follow the instructions displayed on the console, which tell you when to insert
the standard Solaris 2.6 CD.
t To Install Solaris 2.6 from the Network
1. On another Solaris system that is on the same network as the
Netra t1 Model 100/105 to be installed, create a Solaris 2.6 Hardware 5/98 net
install server in accordance with the instructions supplied with the Solaris 2.6
Hardware 5/98 CD.
As you will need to install software from the Solaris Operating Environment
Installation CD onto the Netra t1 Model 100/105, the install image must be copied
on to the local disk.
2. When the install server setup is completed, remove the Solaris 2.6 Hardware 5/98
CD and insert the Solaris Operating Environment Installation CD.
3. Run the modify_install_server script in accordance with the instructions
provided with the CD to update the net install server with the patches required
for a Netra t1 Model 100/105.
4. Obtain the MAC address of the Netra t1 Model 100/105 from the banner, which is
displayed when the system is powered up.
5. Use the MAC address to register the Netra t1 Model 100/105 with the net install
server by running the add_install_client script on that server, as described
in the documentation provided with the Solaris 2.6 Hardware 5/98 CD.
6. When the Netra t1 Model 100/105 is powered up, it should try to boot
automatically from the network. Complete the installation by connecting the
Ethernet, then power on the system.
It is assumed that auto-boot is set to true and the system does not contain a valid
disk from which to boot. If a valid system disk is present, you should break to the
OpenBoot PROM prompt and type the following:
7. Follow the instructions on the console for a normal install, as described in the
documentation provided with the Solaris 2.6 Hardware 5/98 CD.

yes that looks right. I will go through it once again maybe tomorrow or this week sometime and see what I might have missed. I've jumped many servers but yes have made many erros so maybe I missed something. I will post if I get it working!!
