Joystick "Not Connected" Message.

I have a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP MB and am I using the on-board audio by Realtek (Realtek ALC650 CODEC), I installed the latest MS driver for the MS Sidewinder 3D joystick. I cannot get the joystick's software control panel to reconize the controller, I continue to get the message "Not Connected." MS Knowledge Base suggested that the joystick is not compatible with this audio device and game port. Does anyone have a fix for this or can someone recommend a joystick that will work if in fact the MS version will not?

A USB adapter for it should work.
