I have been just assigned the task of joining XP home to a Windows NT4 Domain. The problem I have is that I can’t browse the network from the XP box. I can access the server and all the files, but that’s all. The server is running exchange and I can access my mail from the server. I don’t have a password for the administrator account on XP, is this causing a problem? All the machines have static IP addresses, I can ping all the machines from XP using the IP address but not using the computer name. Everything is set up fine, so why doesn’t it work? Also all the machines get Internet access from the server, guess what, not XP. Help.

Technically Home may not be able to join a Domain, but read on.

From Lockergnome......

"XP Home Edition cannot join network domains, simply peer-to-peer workgroups. However, there is a fix which can solve the problem and allow WinXP Home Edition to join a domain. Microsoft wanted to cripple 'Home' so that it could not be used on domains, which would force many to upgrade to the more expensive Windows XP Professional simply to join a network domain. However, it is possible to get on a domain using the Home Edition. This can be accomplished with the free and widely-available Xteq X-Setup 6.3 by navigating to the 'Network \ Auto Login \ Windows NT/2K/XP \ Settings' option. Simply enter the appropriate information and click the 'Apply Changes' button. On next reboot, you can then join domains with Windows XP Home Edition. Problem solved."

XP Home and Domains

Thanks for the info, I won't be working on this problem till Monday, but I'll give it a go and download this patch.

I have tried using X-Setup 6.3 as described, but I am still unable to join my domain using an XP Home machine. I get a message stating that the system could not log me on and to check my username and password. I've used a variety of usernames and passwords that are all valid on the domain, and yet this message persists. Any ideas??

use
DOMAIN\USER
PASSWORD
as the format when logging into the domain with domain valid credentials. This works. There may be other ways, but this one will work, and as far as I have tested, it does not seem to have any set backs. It pretty much makes you that user to the domain.
