Joining NT domain from different subnet 1

We are having two subnets using router. The PDC is on one subnet and the client (NT workstation 4.0 ) is on another subnet. We are able to ping to the PDC from the client system by both name and IP address. Also we could ping to the client system by name and ip address. But when we tried to join the domain we are getting " the domain controller for this domain is not found " error message. We checked the right for the id through which we tried to join the domain. The user id has the right to add workstation to the domain. We are using lmhosts on both PDC and client side for the name resolution. For security reasons we can't go for WINS server. We suspect the router at both subnets may cause this problem. IF anyone has any solution, it would be nice. My e-mail id is senthilk99@hotmail.com .

Thanks

Do you have a line in you lmhosts file like this??

102.54.94.97 rhino #PRE #DOM:domainname #net group's DC

Do you know if your router does any filtering? are there any security devices, firewall, proxy etc in the mix?

Check out filtering as mentioned by SRG....specifically you will want to see if UPD port 138 is enabled. This port services the netlogon responses.

Your advise helped us. There was a filtering enabled on the RSM module which had two subnets.

Thanks for the advise.
