We recently had a server crash, and I had to purchase a new server. The new server was setup with the same info as the one that crashed (i.e. domain, users(the only difference it the server name). The server is working fine.

My question is: Is there a way to join the workstations to the server without having to create a new profile and copy or recreate the information from the old profile?

Also, I added the computers in AD, but they do not have the domain information, and the login scripts are not executing???

Any answers or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Just because you called the domain the same doesn't mean that it's the same domain. Computer and user accounts from the previous domain don't have access to the new domain - everything needs to be recreated, unless you're doing a disaster recovery.

All the more reason to ALWAYS have at least TWO DCs/GCs.

Ya, I know. What I am asking is there an easy way to recreate the profile or join the domain without changing the profile.

Add the machine to the domain and have the user login, then log out (this creates a new profile, and adds registry entry that includes profile path). Login as the admin, and rename the new profile to .old, and rename the original profile to the new profile name. (Hope that makes sense).

For example:

original profile name: bsmith
new profile name: bsmith.mydomain

rename bsmith to bsmith.old,
rename bsmith.mydomain to bsmith

Roger Roger makes perfect sense. I didn't know if that would work, but I will try it out. What I was doing was copying info from the old profile to the new one basically the same process except copying. But that was creating some problems(especially with Outlook), not many, but some. :)

Thanks for the idea.

It is easier to justify this now that they have had a server go down. :) Pay now or pay later.
