Hello,

I am moving our network from a Workgroup into a Windows2000 Active Directory. Desktops either have W2K Pro or XP Pro. There are a few laptops that don't give any error and seem to join the Domain O.K. but when I try to go and put their Domain User Account in the Local Administrators Group on their computer, Only the Local computer is listed, where as the other computers had the Domain too. On the ones that worked, I selected the Domain and selected their Domain Account and placed it in the Local Administrator's Group without any problems.

I have tried putting these computers back into a Workgroup and then back into the Domain. I have tried adding the Desktop's Domain Computer Account into the Domain Admins Group and then Reset the Computer Account and rejoined and still no luck.

I am positive I am logged on as an Account that is in the Domain Admins Group.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sincerely,
Steve

I have an article about troubleshooting joinings to the win2k domains. Have a look.
But, I have a question: why do you add manually the Domain Admin account to the Local Administartors group? Thiis should be done automaticaly by the join process.

are these xp machines or w2k that you are having the problem. i know with xp when you go to select the users, you cannot edit the "from this location" manually, you have to select "locations" to change to the domain.

Thank you for your response. I must have miss-typed that.

I meant to say that I had the Domain User Account to that Local Administrators Group. The users need local admin privilages.

I will read your article and let you know if I have any questions. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely.
Steve

Dear ksukenny,

I'm having trouble with 1 w2k Pro, 1 w2k Server, 2 XP Pro. Plenty of computers have worked fine.

Sincerely,
Steve

Dear GiaBetiu,

Where is the article you mentioned?

Thank you,
Steve

Hi GiaBetiu,

I read your article and I noticed one odd thing that you mentioned. That an account can only join 10 computers. I think I have done more than that? What else can you tell me about this topic?

If the computer can browse to the DC in Windows Explorer, shouldn't it be able to find it for adding the domain user account to the local administrators group? I am refering to your comment in the article about DsGetDCName using DNS. Our DNS is handled by our router not our DC. If this was the issue why does it work on most of my computers?

I also have 2 laptops that lose the connection to the Server after they log in. They can still browse the Internet. They have to restart the computer and then it is fine the rest of the day? This sounds related.
