Hi All,

6 of my 30 or so backup jobs all mysteriously slowed down on the same evening and have not recovered.

All are running 11.5 SP2 to a SDLT 160/320 tape drive (all the same) on identical SCSI controller cards.

THey have been running at approx 350mb/min for years now, and all of a sudden have dropped to around 150mb/min.

Servers are all Win2K SP4. Any initial thoughts?

We've addressed this with one other person in the forum. SP2 has this problem (of course CA won't acknowledge it....). Upgrade to SP3 and the problem will go away. The other person upgraded and his problem went away also. Be forwarned that if you don't upgrade, it will probably keep getting worse, little by little.

Ok thanks mate. Was lookin for a reason to push a migration to SP3!

Will let you know.

we have experienced issues lately when TOE NIC cards are involved. Solved this through NIC driver updates.

regards

ok moving to 11.5 SP3 hasnt helped. We upgraded 2 servers last night and theyre both running with the same performance.

Run a backup of the ARCserve server to see if it is also slow which will indicate the bottleneck is local to the ARCserve server. If the local backup is normal then the bottleneck is either network or target related.

do these servers all go though the same switch?

Hi mate,

Most of the backup issues are LOCAL backups. Theyre at various sites across the UK.

Ok update.

Turns out that ETrust had its policies re-created and propagated to all the servers in our domain on the night the backups started to slow down.

Our security team responsible says the policies are identical. Im skeptical!

Does this help anyone?

We also had this problem updating the intel nic drivers sorted it for us.

It was ETrust. They miraculously solved the problem after spending an hour repeatedly denying it was their fault.

Ar$eholes!

:)
