My boss is interviewing potential candidates for a new position here. He wants me to provide two PBX questions. I have some but I think mine may be a little difficult. Especially since our jobs are heavy on Cisco switch/router side. So I didn't want to ask real tough questions that would lock them up, but at the same time a question that someone with a basic understanding of a PBX could answer.

Any suggestions? One of my questions was, Provide a basic exlanation of tip and ring. That was a question I had years ago, during an interview. I had a tough time with it.

Suggestions would be great. THX in advance.

get a copy of newtons telecom dictonary. Pick any page and ask them to talk about it what ever topic you come upon.

I would include diagnostic skills as part of the conversation. Being able to isolate a problem (network, PBX, end user) is a major asset. A basic understanding of what goes on in the PSTN, as well as within your buildings, is a major asset.

How about

1.How many years experience do you have on Avaya PBX administration and what systems?
2. How many years experience do you have preforming maintenance on Avaya PBX and what systems??

Have them explain the steps involved with the installation of IP Phones...

Have them explain diverse inbound/outbound PSTN routing.

Thanks,
