I have come to that fork in the road that I need to really get a better understanding of the 200 and 3300. I live on Vancouver Island and from googling it seems i'd have to go way back east.

But does mitel or perhaps my VAR offer some kind of "in home" or online schooling?

As always I will still continue to ask questions here and always appreciate the help. Experience surpasses all!!

Thanks!

Jim

The instructor lead and On line courses are available to dealers. Mitel typically does not directly allow end user customer to attend these courses unless "sponsored" by their dealer. I have seen it happen, so there is a way to make it work for you.

What makes you think that you have time to fix it?

Training is also offered in Arizona. There are end user MAC coursesavailable but you do need a dealer to sponsor you.

Speaking as someone (25 yrs Mitel experience) who took his first 3300 training via the "virtual classroon", it was kind of a waste of time. We got the certificate but didn't learn much. That was the first and last attempt at online training for us. Subsequently all of our training (except routine product updates) have been instructor-led in a real classroom, either Atlanta or Kanata.

Hey all, thanks for the feedback. MIMB, that was my concern, I'm not really after paper work, but knowledge.

I remember a while back I jokingly said to my VAR, Man I could learn a ton if I could work with you guys for a couple weeks. His response was positive, but I highly doubt that my company would let me go haha.

And there is no way they are sending me off Island. Thats too bad, really like this technology just feeling a bit left behind.

Back to the .PDFs and hacking on the home system.

Thanks alot!!!!

Jim

Typically Mitel certification is only offered to dealers. There is a supposed to be a new online course coming. It is to include a 4 day course and a test for certification on done online with an instructor.

There may be no i in team but there are three f's in fudge off.

I'm an end-user but a bit of an exception.
I'm certified in Sx10-20, 100, 200, 200D, 200DACD and 2000 (Dark) MAC.
Mitel has never had a problem with me attending 2000 Light I&M, OPS Mgr and I even did the Lightware Rls 34 upgrade courses on Mitel On-line.
We are now looking at upgrade to 3300 and I don't anticipate any issue with my attending those courses either.

If you have a MOL account that lets you book training ( and it appears that you have )then I would suggest you go there an look for the online 3300 I&M Course when it appears and see if you can sign up. What you can sign up for depends on your MOL account type. There are user and VAR accounts. I believe unless your account is a VAR account you will not be able to book the course.

Already been on it to see what courses I need.

How much do these courses typically run? I'm an end user and I'm interested it going through it. I'm the Systems Admin here but I'm also very phone (and phone system) oriented. I did full management of our Comdial DXP before we moved to the 3300.

The Mitel Communications Director (MCD) for 3300 ICP Basic I&M course covers fundamental tasks involved in installing, configuring and troubleshooting a single standalone 3300 ICP.
This course qualifies new technicians with Mitel Communications Director for 3300 ICP Basic Certification and qualifies them for
basic 3300 ICP support.
It also qualifies technicians for entry into the Mitel Communications Director for 3300 ICP Advanced I&M Leader-Led course.

$2200 CAD for the 1st course. 1 week.

Hmm something to consider in the fall - would this class be of any value if I'm already pretty familiar with most of the basics like adding/removing phones/vm boxes, configuring network settings, etc.

Where I'm really lacking is in troubleshooting, reading logs or basically getting info out of SMDR, and more importantly the built-in VM that I just CANNOT get to work right.

I've got thirty years in telecom. I've stumbled through many key systems and PBX's with a manual in one hand and a brick in the other. I would demand the courses and one course is not enough to cover what you have detailed on that product.

I have a good relationship with the vendors and no one contests my access or activity on the switches - I wouldn't consider doing what I do without the courses.

I have attended some product classes - total waste of time. If you have a good manual and general understanding of the technology, you will gain much more skills by self-learning. Mitel provides excellent documentation, so just RTFM. When we migrated to mitel from old Avaya, our "certified" VAR made a number of design mistakes, which are echoing for years. Eventually we fired that VAR and hired another which will not interferre with our activities and will just provide a bridge to Mitel products and resources.

Thanks for the feedback - I figured as much, and honestly I just wish I had access to the Mitel web site really. Your experience is simliar to ours - the VAR didn't do a great job implementing our system, and even 2 years later they still can't get some things to work. We used to have a Comdial DXP system that absolutely rocked, and I regret getting rid of it, although it would have been crazy to move it (we moved buildings).

I mainly have issues with voicemail - it seems the VM system embedded in the 3300 was not only an afterthought, but I think a 16 year old designed it.

Scratch that - a 16 year old would have done a bang up job I think ;-)

1. You can get access to Mitel web site by joining Mitel User Group. It comes with some annual fee, but any company can pay it. Most likely it is just for screening purposes, so random people would not mess with the stuff.
2. Embedded voicemail is cheap and very basic solution. It works ok for us, but you should not expect too much from it. It operates per hardcoded script where end-user cannot change much. There are more powerful and flexible solutions available from Mitel. Also nobody can stop you from using any third party VM solution. We use Asterisk PBX as IVR and specialized voicemail without any limitations.

OH man I totally forgot about that! I think I found out about the user group late one night and meant to register the next day. Doing this right now...thanks!!!
