We cant see a JetDirect 500x on our Novell network.

We have figured out that if we plug in a HUB between the JetDirect box and the network we can PING the JetDirect box.

NETWORK_POINT--->HUB--->JetDirect_Box

Otherwise the JetDirect 500x is not visible on the network.

The JetDirect 500x has a firmware rev. j.08.20
Configured the IP through the HP software.

The message "unable to sense net number" on the hardcopy of the configuration page.
CISCO switches in the back end. Surely we dont have to step these down from 100 to 10 to allow communication?

NO queue setup for the printer as we are using IP printing?

We are using IP only no IPX.

What configuration is your Cisco port? Is it forced to a particular setting or is it left at auto-negotiate? I would try auto to see if it picks up or try forcing it to 100Mb Half Duplex as the issue may be a Full Duplex issue.

Also check what the JetDirect is set at. Mine usually were set to 10\half. (Jumpers on the box.)

Most Jet Direct devices I've seen, at least the older ones, only work at 10/half. If you're trying to force it to 100 from the switch (Which it sounds like you're doing), of course it won't work.

If you have the HP part number from the unit, we could reference the specs and find out for sure what the switch port needs to be set to to work properly

Most JetDirects do have little toggle switches on them to change the speed, but Marvin is correct. I have found that they almost always need to be 10/half.

Thanks guys. Looks like we will have to drop the speed on the port to 10 then.

Why are HP making devices running at 10 not 100 does this not slow down performance? Are all of their devices at 10?

:)

No, just the Jetdirects. Since this only printing it should be fast enough.
Maybe they have old hardware still in them?

Flamingferrari;

HP makes their devices to run at either 10 and 100 (unless you've got a really old print server) and either full or half duplex. The default is to autonegotiate.

One problem I've found with HP autonegotiation (at least with our switches -- Nortel) is that while the HP picks up on the correct speed (either 10 or 100) it always fails the duplex, defaulting to Half. Normally, this just slows down the printing, usually not to where people notice it, but it also generates a lot of errors on the network. I've just gotten into the habit of diasbling autonegotiate on the print servers and setting the speed and duplex manually. (95% of our print servers are internal, not external, so my advice may not apply to you.) On the newer print servers, this can be done with the setup panel on the printer. On the older versions of the print server card, I've had to yank the card and change the jumpers to fix the speed and duplex. I imagine your 500 has some dip switches that you'd flip to set the speed and duplex.
