Java Causing PC Hang

Hi,
Everytime i open up the java plugin in control panel and any application based around java and its applets my PC hangs and will sometimes just reboot and then say it recovered from a critical error.
I have tried updating to the latest version (from the java site) installing all windows updates and still nothing happens it just locks up, this is a fresh install of windows as well.
Anybody got an idea what is happening?

What clues are available in the Event Viewer?

Does the Plugin applet open up in Safe Mode or under another user profile?

Thanks for the response
Plugin loads better in safe mode, as do all java applications.
no error appears in the event viewer; somethings not right somewhere :S

The next step would be to try and find out what is clashing with it via a process of elimination.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Nothing like turfing up an old thread but if anyone is interested i fixed it by turning off my forced anti anilising and it works
