j179 Pass through port to PC

have a few small offices with SIP J179's that have the desktop computers connected to the network through the pass-through switch on the J179. The phones work fine, but the computers randomly lose connection to the network and the extension has to be disconnected and restarted to get both devices back up and running. I dont see anything that is necessarily wrong in the set up but something is making the computer lose the connection. This is set up through the Lan 1, and there isn't a lot of traffic, and no VLAN is programmed through the switch. I am not a Computer/switch expert by any means and I cannot figure out what is causing this issue.

It came to mind that perhaps they needed to set up on separate VLAN? None of the offices have a lot of traffic. but then, my next question is, can they put different VLANs through the same network switch port?

I know i am rambling, but i am sure open to suggestions.
 
How many computers and phones do they have at each site? The more of both the more likely it is you need VLANs.

As for the question with having the phone on one VLAN and passing a different VLAN (or not VLAN) to the computer yes this can absolutely be done through the 46xxsettings.txt file (well I guess the 46xxspecials.txt nowadays) along with specific setup of the VLAN switch.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.
 
Thank you for the suggestions. I think I am going to move the DHCP to the IP office instead of the network computer I am also going to upgrade the IP office from 11.1.1 to 11.1.2 A small change but it should ensure the phones have the very latest in Firmware and software. Depending on the results of these steps, I will follow up with Separating the VLANs.
 
jimrit, be sure to check "For Avaya devices only" on that IPO DHCP server. Also, since you don't have vLANs, be sure to choose a range outside of the existing DHCP server's range for your phones.

The first thing I'd check in this scenario would be to see if DHCP leases were expiring, and the pool was exhausted.
 
This is not going to work.

Although you enable ' for avaya devices only' on the IP Office dhcp server, that only means that the IP Office will not gove IP addresses to a non Avaya device. But the native DHCP server will hand ip adresses to avaya devices.

You will need vlans if you want to use a separate DHCP server for the phones.
 
Okkie26, thanks for clarifying. Its been a long time since I used a non-centralized DHCP server.
