i've just installed mandrake 8.2 and have to install a variety of web browsers netscape 7, mozilla etc - I logged in as a normal user and downloaded the zip files - I unzipped them and then I logged in as SU to install the program:

Where should the programs be installed so that can be used by all users when they login ? What is the equivalent of c:/programs in linux?

Any help much appreciated as well as any help with respect to installing new packages.

The programs should be installed in /usr/bin (mozilla nad netscape). The components reside in /usr/lib/(mozilla and netscape). THere are primarily four directories that hold the executables depending upon the function of the file. The four are:
/bin
/usr/bin
/sbin
/usr/sbin

However, /usr/local can also be used for some exec files local to the system. Your path must be set of course. Also, if you loaded Mandrake 8.2, mozilla is one of the programs that can be loaded at the time of installation.

If you want to find where a program resides, type:
which <program name>
As long as the program is installed and the directory is in your path, it will display where the program resides.

Zip files?

You may want to use the .rpm files or at least .tgz .tar.gz or .gz files. The Netscape/Mozilla files are usually pretty much automatic, they'll ask you if you want to create a local or system-wide installation and proceed according to your answer.
