Alright. So I am capturing with Premiere's setting for "uncompressed NTSC DV-AVI", 720x480. Then, I edit, export to tape. My professor told me that the video has lost quality (it had. although i went from DV tape to PC, to DV tape, a slight graininess occurs when played back.). So, I took the raw AVI file and opened it in both Windows Media Player and Winamp...Winamp says that the resolution of the video is "360x240". Windows Media Player says the file, when right clicked, is "720x480", however when played at 100% zoom, it is playing at "360x240" size.

So, I ask you, WHAT IS WRONG!!!

Microsoft DV AVI
Video: 720 x 480 at 29.97fps
Compression: 'Microsoft DV(ntsc)' @ 100%
Audio: 16bit
Uncompressed

That is also how I import. But when I bring it into Windows Media Player, it plays it back at 100% at half the resolution. Argh.

Try and use another program to view the file. Ie virtual Dub (freeware) or Winamp 3.0 has a media/movie player; and see if its at the right resolution.

I believe that it has already been compressed (or lost resolution quality) during capture. Please check your raw avi file size. In my case, a short movie of 300 minutes, the file size of the captured file is about 1 GB. But, here, let's make a calculation:

720x480x3x29.97x300=9,321,868,800 Byte = 9.3 GB

Where the (x3) is for the 24 bit color, 29.97 is for the fram per second or fps, and 300s is the length of 5 minutes. You see, there is only about 1/9 in size.

I'm going to have to guess it's a DV problem. I get that, too, when I capture digital video. Virtual dub and premiere tell me the video is 720x480 but media player claims it's half that, but only when it's using the DV codec. Is there a problem with it, or just curious about its misreporting. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...but I'm just a C man trying to see the light

I figured out the problem. Before you play your video on Media Player, open WMP and hit Tools> Options> Performance tab> Advanced button> and drag the Digital Video slider all the way to "large". That should work for you.

Yes, you're right. It looks better.

In addition to my previous comment, here is some information at
"Microsoft DV (NTSC) and Microsoft DV (PAL)
Microsoft's DV (NTSC) and DV (PAL) codecs are used to compress video transferred to and from a DV camera and an OHCI device on computers running Windows 98SE and later. Microsoft DV (NTSC) and Microsoft DV (PAL) have a fixed data rate (3.6 MB/second) and frame size (720 x 480). Microsoft DV (NTSC) is used with DV cameras manufactured in North America and Japan; Microsoft DV (PAL) is used with DV cameras manufactured in Europe. "

It means that the original avi file from the captured DV has already compressed 9:1 by Microsoft DV.

There are some helpful messages about the quality in this webpage. For instance, the "Key Frames" is very important in the compression quality.
