We're in the middle of a SharePoint deployment and are evaluating the
options for document level restores. It looks like our only options
are Avepoint DocAve 3.1 and CommVault® Galaxy™ iDataAgents™ for
SharePoint Portal Server 2003. Who has experience with these products
and which one would you recommend? Any other solutions?

Hello,

I am running DocAve 3.1 (and 2.5) for both item level and site level backups on both WSS and SPS evironments. I am very pleased with the product.
It was really easy setup and install. It is also very easy to create backup&restore jobs. Restore an item just takes a few minutes and it works very nice. I have not yet had any problems at all with it.

Just one tip with DocAve, take a close look at the licenses and try and estimated how many sites/portals you are going to have. We purchased a 500 site license for our WSS environment, and then it turns out that subsites are not treated as a separate site (which was the first info we received).

Also when it comes to support from DocAve I must say that they have been outstanding and very very helpful.

Only downside of the product, might be the cost, but besides that I only have good experiences with it.

I have not tested the CommVault product so do not know much about it.

Regards,
Thomas

Thanks for the reply! Although DocAve seems to be the most robust solution SharePoint experts PowerRecycle seems like it might do the trick and save thousands of dollars. Any opinions on this as well?

Hello,

I think that PowerRecycle will also work. Although it might be more of a setup but it will most likely save you some bucks. It depends on what kind of level of backup and restore possibilities you want. With PowerRecycle I think you wil manually have to configure it to the document libraries etc, it is not applied by default to eveything.

We chosed the DocAve because our site adminstrators are managing their site(s) as they see fit and they are allowed to create subsites, libraries etc. on their own, but we (the technical dep.) are responsible for taking backups, and with a couple of 100 sites or more it would be to much to mangage with manual work.

Regards,
Thomas
