I have used ITC to create a second copy of the backup. The primary tape is no longer available. How can a restore from the secondary be handled. Is this automatic within netbackup of does the secondary have to be made the primary.

Depends what you mean by the primary is not avalible any more. If the primary does not exist anymore and the system knows that then the copy will be come the primary.

The images for the original primary do not exist. Different retention levels. Does the duplicate automatically become the primary in this case

Yes I think it does. There is somthing about it in the docs. But the best way it to suck it and see.

From the sysadmin guide for 4.5
When the primary expires, a different copy automatically becomes primary. (The one
chosen is the one with the smallest copy number. If the primary is copy 1, when it
expires, copy 2 becomes primary. If the primary is copy 5, when it expires, copy 1
becomes primary.)

You may wish to use the bpchangeprimary command.

Usage: bpchangeprimary -copy number | -pool volume_pool | -group volume_group
[-id backup_id] [-M master_server]
bpchangeprimary -copy number | -pool volume_pool | -group volume_group
[-sl schedule_name] [-pn policy_name]
[-st schedule_type] [-pt policy_type]
[-cl client_name]
[-kw keyword]
[-sd mm/dd/yyyy [ HH:MM:SS ] ] [-ed mm/dd/yyyy [ HH:MM:SS ] ]
[-M master_server]

Make sure you apply it only to the client/policy/schedule_name/type/backupid you are after.

The command can change the primary of all tapes!
