An ASC with no R value on the label.......I suspect it is a R 1 version. Anyway it had a power plug plugged into the back of the ACS rather than a carrier.........man was that stupid!

Here's how it all went wrong.

The original problem was a blown fuse on the power supply. A (250) 3 amp fuse was put back in......shoulda been a 4 amp fuse and it blew again. Then a 4 amp fuse was put in but this time the 2 card carrrier was not available and the power cord went straight into the back of the ASC card where it promptly began to smoke. So does anyone know where I can get a schematic of the power supply for this unit.
The power supply has these Numbers:

98KZ54341352
847766938

15-98-00

Backside shows "Made in Mexico"

and number 848117289 am2

The components on board that are bad are labeled:

IC 101 chip
Q 102 transistor
Rc 102 diode
RC 103 "
NT 100 ??? maybe a thermistor

Thanks for any help converting those component numbers over to part numbers I can buy or at some point maybe I can buy a rebuild or refurb power supply.

Hi phdude,
Send it in to Avaya for service. I have repaired these power supplies before, but they don't normally burn out that badly. Avaya will probably replace the power supply sub assy. Better for you in the long run if you have pcb trace damage. Or possibly they will allow a trade up to the latest rev? You don't know if you don't ask.
Good luck, Chris

I was under the impression that you could have a stand alone 308 ACS. If that is correct the power cord deal straight into the KSU was not a problem? (Did it need a different cord?) Were there different versions not able to stand alone? I feel I could repair this KSU if I knew more about the replacement components and a schematic to look at to trace circuit. I appreciate you folks responding on this thread. Heck, who knows someone may have the parts or a power supply.

The POWER SUPPLY is not integrated. It is a separate unit inside the module that connects to the main ACS board via a ribbon cable and grounding wire. The early release ACS had a weak power supply that is prone to overheating. We have a guy that repairs these for us for $150. I'd say that's less costly than buying a whole new ACS. Brian Cox

ItPPhoneGuy,

Could you give me a link for Avaya repair.

Was the ACS r1 able to stand alone with a standard power cord ?

How do you know which partner units can stand alone?

I still would like to repair this unit myself. I just need to get the info.

Thanks

phdude

Hi phdude,
The Partner ACS is stand alone capable. The same power cord is used, so that is not the cause of failure. The units that I have seen fail have a shorted zener diode only. It runs too hot. I reduce the drive and parallel two zeners (5W). I don't know if this is the correct thing to do, but I have one that is running happily now (ACS 3.0). The 308 expansion cards seem to have the same power supply with the same fault.
If you have all those components blown, check the main PCB for shorted varistors. Those protect from overvoltage. You may find other main board problems as well. Every one of the failed units I have seen show signs of high temperature on the clamshell.
Happy hunting - Chris

Hi phdude,
I'd say that you should contact Brian Cox. His people are more likely to have seen your failure before. I do not think you should attempt this one yourself as it sounds like it is a very involved repair. A used ACS could turn out to be a better deal depending, so keep an open mind.
The only reason I repair some units is that I have 20+ yrs in repair. I know a fair bit about components and how to sub them (I found a better power FET that runs cooler). I do not have any training from Avaya/Lucent/AT&T on servicing their equipment. I wish I had schematics but I won't hold my breath on getting any.
I have found Brain to be very helpful as are many others here.

Take it easy, Chris

Does anybody know what the value for the diode CR105 on the above mentioned board? Mine is kinda toasty and hard to read.

Thanks.

The early (pre-R3) power supplies were weak and tended to smoke from heat. The direct plug-in power cord tends to make a weak one go bad due to the surge and the effects of a full power burst. With a carrier, at least some other modules absorb some of the surge.

replaces, not repairs, the power supply and replaces the weak station chips, then sends it back to you via UPS Ground with a 1 year guarantee for $100. I've had dozens done with a 2-3% non-repairable rate.

If you just want to buy a power supply, has them and the ICs for cheap.

Thanks for the links. I bought a new R6 for $600.00 plus $66 for overnight shipping (NJ->TX), so I will probably just send my old unit to telecommhit.com and let them repair and upgrade the unit so I can have a backup on the shelf.

At first I thought it was only the internal fuse until I saw the charred remains of the CR105 diode.

Nothing like losing the telephone system to make a Tuesday exciting...

You do know that you will need a Port silence for the R6, the base VMS is $595 then you need to get a 2,4,6 port License/Backup. If you paid 600 and got it all then you got a very good deal.

Ahem...I believe we were discussing ACS processors....not Messaging. Too much egg nog? heheh

Hi Diego101,
Sometimes the smart choice looks like the most expensive. I think you made a wise decision. I will look at one of these when I get the chance and let you know what the diode is. If it's the one I think it is it does run hot.

392,
Wow, did I blow it. I was on the phone talking with a customer about VMS while at the same time looking at this post. Now I feel like Homer Simpson [bigears]
Sorry all
